5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The 80th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly |

6 | 7 | | cause for celebration, and Mable L. Armstrong reached that |

7 | 8 | | significant milestone in her life on August 26, 2021; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mable Armstrong was born in Sulphur Springs to |
---|
9 | 10 | | Earlene Tilman and James Hodge in 1941, and she grew up in the Queen |
---|
10 | 11 | | City neighborhood of South Dallas; after graduating from Lincoln |
---|
11 | 12 | | High School in 1958, she went to work as a seamstress, eventually |
---|
12 | 13 | | pursuing her profession with several downtown Dallas department |
---|
13 | 14 | | stores; later in life, she started her own business, Artistic |
---|
14 | 15 | | Floral and Gift Designs, one of the first minority-owned retail |
---|
15 | 16 | | shops in West Dallas; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Joined in matrimony to Bishop Dr. James |
---|
17 | 18 | | Armstrong Sr., Mrs. Armstrong has raised a family in West Dallas |

18 | 19 | | while devoting much of her time and energy to her community; in the |
---|
19 | 20 | | mid-1970s, she started serving meals to kids and families in the |
---|
20 | 21 | | local housing projects, and she went on to become a certified drug |
---|
21 | 22 | | counselor, a regular volunteer with the Salvation Army, and a |
---|
22 | 23 | | volunteer hospital chaplain; she also established "the House That |
---|
23 | 24 | | Love Built," a ministry for children; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, In 1989, Mrs. Armstrong founded the Community Care |
---|
25 | 26 | | Center of Dallas, which offers housing and other services to |
---|
26 | 27 | | individuals recovering from addiction; it has also provided school |
---|
27 | 28 | | supplies and Christmas gifts to thousands of children, as well as |
---|
28 | 29 | | programs for senior citizens; and |
---|
29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of her many contributions, Dallas |
---|
30 | 31 | | Christian College honored Mrs. Armstrong with its Lifetime |
---|
31 | 32 | | Achievement Award; this dynamic woman continues to serve as |
---|
32 | 33 | | executive director of the Community Care Center, as a board member |
---|
33 | 34 | | of Love in Action International, and as the founding First Lady of |
---|
34 | 35 | | Community Fellowship Church of Dallas; and |
---|
35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Respected and admired by all who are privileged to |
---|
36 | 37 | | know her, Mable Armstrong may reflect with satisfaction on a |
---|
37 | 38 | | lifetime of devotion to her family, her community, and her faith, |
---|
38 | 39 | | and it is a pleasure to join with her many friends and loved ones in |

39 | 40 | | honoring her on this special occasion; now, therefore, be it |

40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

41 | 42 | | Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Mable L. |
