8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The son of Bonifacio and Antonia Barrera, Alberto |

9 | 10 | | Barrera was born in Rio Grande City on August 17, 1930, and grew up |

10 | 11 | | with six siblings, Eduardo, Bonifacio, Benicio, Rogelio, Angelica, |
---|
11 | 12 | | and Sylvia; he shared a rewarding marriage with his wife, Celia, |
---|
12 | 13 | | that spanned 61 years, and he was the proud father of four children, |
---|
13 | 14 | | Armandina, Alberto, Arnoldo, and Ambarina; later in life, he |
---|
14 | 15 | | welcomed into his family eight grandchildren, José, Justin, |
---|
15 | 16 | | Jocelin, Alberto, Adan, Armando, Araceli, and Connor, and a |

16 | 17 | | great-granddaughter, Juliette; and |

17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, After graduating from Rio Grande City High School in |

18 | 19 | | 1948, Mr. Barrera attended Pan American Junior College and went on |
---|
19 | 20 | | to receive his bachelor's degree from Texas A&I College in 1952; he |

20 | 21 | | subsequently answered his nation's call to duty by serving in the |
---|
21 | 22 | | U.S. Army for two years before embarking on a long and distinguished |
---|
22 | 23 | | career as an educator; over the course of more than five decades, he |
---|
23 | 24 | | taught for the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School |
---|
24 | 25 | | District, Pan American University, and South Texas College; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Barrera also earned an impressive reputation as |
---|
26 | 27 | | a folklorist and artist, performing his compositions across the |
---|
27 | 28 | | United States and in Spain and Mexico, and he conducted extensive |
---|
28 | 29 | | studies in his field at such institutions as Colgate University, |
---|
29 | 30 | | Oklahoma State University, Universidad de Mexico, the University of |
---|
30 | 31 | | North Texas, Universidad de Burgos España, and La Universidad de |
---|
31 | 32 | | Madrid en España; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Alberto Barrera lived a rich and purposeful life |

33 | 34 | | dedicated to his family, his profession, and his artistry, and he |
---|
34 | 35 | | leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all those who |

35 | 36 | | were fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it |

36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

37 | 38 | | Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |

38 | 39 | | of Alberto Barrera and extend heartfelt sympathy to his relatives |

39 | 40 | | and many friends; and, be it further |
