45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their
67 memories of Alberto Barrera of Rio Grande City, who died on January
78 14, 2018, at the age of 87; and
89 WHEREAS, The son of Bonifacio and Antonia Barrera, Alberto
910 Barrera was born in Rio Grande City on August 17, 1930, and grew up
1011 with six siblings, Eduardo, Bonifacio, Benicio, Rogelio, Angelica,
1112 and Sylvia; he shared a rewarding marriage with his wife, Celia,
1213 that spanned 61 years, and he was the proud father of four children,
1314 Armandina, Alberto, Arnoldo, and Ambarina; later in life, he
1415 welcomed into his family eight grandchildren, José, Justin,
1516 Jocelin, Alberto, Adan, Armando, Araceli, and Connor, and a
1617 great-granddaughter, Juliette; and
1718 WHEREAS, After graduating from Rio Grande City High School in
1819 1948, Mr. Barrera attended Pan American Junior College and went on
1920 to receive his bachelor's degree from Texas A&I College in 1952; he
2021 subsequently answered his nation's call to duty by serving in the
2122 U.S. Army for two years before embarking on a long and distinguished
2223 career as an educator; over the course of more than five decades, he
2324 taught for the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School
2425 District, Pan American University, and South Texas College; and
2526 WHEREAS, Mr. Barrera also earned an impressive reputation as
2627 a folklorist and artist, performing his compositions across the
2728 United States and in Spain and Mexico, and he conducted extensive
2829 studies in his field at such institutions as Colgate University,
2930 Oklahoma State University, Universidad de Mexico, the University of
3031 North Texas, Universidad de Burgos España, and La Universidad de
3132 Madrid en España; and
3233 WHEREAS, Alberto Barrera lived a rich and purposeful life
3334 dedicated to his family, his profession, and his artistry, and he
3435 leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all those who
3536 were fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it
3637 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3738 Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
3839 of Alberto Barrera and extend heartfelt sympathy to his relatives
3940 and many friends; and, be it further
4041 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4142 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4243 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Alberto
4344 Barrera.
