45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their
67 memories of Vandie Lindsey Smith Jr. of Magnolia Springs, who died
78 on July 2, 2021, at the age of 64; and
89 WHEREAS, The son of Vandie Smith Sr. and Lula Bell Smith,
910 Vandie Smith was born in Beaumont on December 15, 1956; he graduated
1011 from Kirbyville High School in 1975 and went on to enjoy a career
1112 with Temple-Inland and MeadWestvaco that spanned nearly four
1213 decades until his retirement; in 1986, he joined the Tri-Community
1314 Volunteer Fire Department, rising through the ranks to become the
1415 department's chief in 2007 and serving in that position until the
1516 end of his life; and
1617 WHEREAS, Mr. Smith shared a rewarding 45-year marriage with
1718 his wife, Myrtha, and he was a devoted father to their four
1819 children, Vandie, Shanta, Bryan, and Brent; later in life, he took
1920 great pride in welcoming into his family 10 grandchildren and 2
2021 great-grandchildren; and
2122 WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Uncle Len," Mr. Smith
2223 delighted in the time he spent with his loved ones, and he was a
2324 Little League coach for many years; he also enjoyed hunting,
2425 fishing, farming, and traveling; an active member of Magnolia
2526 Springs Church of God in Christ, he served the congregation as
2627 deacon; and
2728 WHEREAS, Vandie Smith lived a rich and purposeful life
2829 devoted to his family, his community, and his faith, and he leaves
2930 behind a record of service that will continue to inspire all those
3031 who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it
3132 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3233 Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
3334 of Vandie Lindsey Smith Jr. and extend heartfelt sympathy to the
3435 members of his family: to his wife, Myrtha Barlow Smith; to his
3536 children, Vandie Smith III and his wife, Lita, and Shanta, Bryan,
3637 and Brent Smith; to his grandchildren, Terion, Daeshika, Ashunda,
3738 Lindsey, Keverly, and Kezian Smith, Deldrick Spikes, Camelia
3839 Gilbert, Rayford Gilbert Jr., and Madison Hawkins; to his
3940 great-grandchildren, Nohlan Spikes and Kartier Mixon; to his
4041 godchildren, Dar'Ranica Barlow, Madison Adams, and William Cooper;
4142 to his sisters, LaRue Floyd and her husband, Jimmy, Frankie Smith
4243 and her husband, Jerry, and Stacy Smith; and to his many other
4344 relatives and friends; and, be it further
4445 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4546 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4647 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Vandie
4748 Smith.
