45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the
67 passing of Chalys Diane Baker of Amarillo on May 22, 2021, at the
78 age of 88; and
89 WHEREAS, The former Diane Gross was born on September 30,
910 1932, in Evanston, Illinois, to Dorothy and Peter Gross; she
1011 graduated from Santa Fe High School in New Mexico, before enrolling
1112 at New Mexico State University, where she met her future husband,
1213 Richard Allen Mayfield; during his career in the U.S. Air Force, the
1314 couple lived in locations around the world and together raised
1415 three daughters, Cheri, Pamela, and Karen; after their marriage
1516 ended, she wed Jerry Baker; and
1617 WHEREAS, While living in Santa Fe, Ms. Baker served as
1718 director of the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce and the Santa Fe
1819 Convention and Visitors Bureau; she played an integral role in
1920 elevating the city's status as a tourism destination, and she was
2021 also appointed as the marketing director for the State of New
2122 Mexico; her contributions to the city and state were widely
2223 appreciated, and her honors included the official proclamation of
2324 Diane Baker Day by the mayor of Santa Fe; and
2425 WHEREAS, Ms. Baker went on to establish the Convention and
2526 Visitors Bureau for Huntington Beach, California, and in that role,
2627 she coined the community's well-known moniker of "Surf City USA";
2728 in the course of her outstanding career, she also developed the
2829 Orange County Tourism Council, worked closely with executives and
2930 staff from Disneyland, and became the first woman to hold a seat on
3031 the board of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; and
3132 WHEREAS, Later in life, Ms. Baker moved to Amarillo to be
3233 closer to her grandchildren, whom she cherished deeply; after
3334 settling into her life as a Texan, she put her expertise to work as a
3435 member of the Amarillo Convention and Visitors Bureau board, and
3536 she was a congregant and elder at the First Presbyterian Church of
3637 Amarillo; and
3738 WHEREAS, Drawing on her exceptional energy and talents, Diane
3839 Baker was a respected professional who tremendously benefited the
3940 communities in which she lived, and she will forever be remembered
4041 with admiration and affection by those she leaves behind; now,
4142 therefore, be it
4243 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4344 Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
4445 of Chalys Diane Baker and extend deepest sympathy to the members of
4546 her family: to her daughters, Cheri Lynn Kofakis and her husband,
4647 Jim Kofakis, Pamela Ann Mayfield and her husband, Charley Runkle,
4748 and Karen Diane Price and her husband, Four Price; to her
4849 grandchildren, Brooke Diane Reynolds and her husband, Fisher, Cody
4950 Allen Barnhill and his fiancée, Madison Varney, Abigail Kathryn
5051 Price, and Thomas Curry Price; and to her other relatives and
5152 friends; and, be it further
5253 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5354 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5455 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Diane
5556 Baker.
