5+ SENATE RESOLUTION
56 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
67 Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas in mourning the loss of
78 Principal Chief Herbert G. Johnson Sr., who died August 9, 2021,
89 at the age of 79; and
910 WHEREAS, A member of the Beaver Clan, this beloved tribe
1011 leader served his people in numerous capacities throughout his
1112 life; he was a patient mentor and youth advocate, and he inspired
1213 others to joyfully uphold long-held tribal traditions and
1314 values; and
14- WHEREAS, Herbert Johnson was born on April 3, 1942, on
15- the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas Indian Reservation near
15+ WHEREAS, Herbert Johnson was born on April 3, 1942, on the
16+ Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas Indian Reservation near
1617 Livingston; he attended Jacksonville College, where he earned
1718 all-American status for his record-setting 1963 basketball
1819 season; and
1920 WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was twice elected to the Tribe
2021 Council, and he served as director of tribal security for 21
2122 years; he was elected second chief of the tribe in 2013, and he
2223 stepped in as principal chief, the tribe's Mikko Choba Skalaaba,
2324 in 2020; the esteemed community leader also served as an elder at
2425 the Indian Presbyterian Church, and he was a member of the Big
2526 Sandy Independent School District School Board for 48 years; and
26- WHEREAS, Herbert Johnson guided the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe
27- of Texas with strength, wisdom, and compassion, and he leaves
28- behind a legacy of service and leadership that will inspire tribe
29- members for generations to come; now, therefore, be it

3032 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
3133 Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
3234 condolences to the bereaved family of Herbert G. Johnson Sr.;
3335 and, be it further
3436 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3537 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3638 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
3739 memory of Mr. Herbert Johnson.
