5	6		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
6	7		commemorates the life of Letitia Washington Plummer, who died
7	8		July 13, 2021, at the age of 98; and
8	9		WHEREAS, Letitia Plummer was born on August 23, 1922, in
9	10		Morales, to J. D. Washington and Eulalia Haynes Washington; she
10	11		graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in San Antonio in
11	12		1938, and she went on to earn a degree in chemistry from Tillotson
12	13		College in Austin; and
13	14		WHEREAS, She married the late Matthew Plummer in April of
14	15		1943, and the couple moved to Tuskegee, Alabama, where their
15	16		sons, Matthew and James Plummer, were born; they were later
16	17		blessed with a daughter, the late Diane Letitia Plummer; her five
17	18		grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren were a source of
18	19		much pride and joy for her; and
19	20		WHEREAS, The family moved to Houston in 1949, and she
20	21		earned a master's degree in counseling from Texas Southern
21	22		University in 1954; she enjoyed a distinguished career as an
22	23		educator and first served as a counselor at Houston's Phillis
23	24		Wheatley High School; she later became the executive director of
24	25		Guidance and Counseling with the Houston Independent School
25	26		District, and she became known for her efforts to channel
26	27		minority students toward college instead of toward trade
27	28		schools; and
28	29		WHEREAS, A woman of wisdom, courage, and determination,
29	30		she gave unselfishly to others, and she will long be remembered
30	31		for her radiant smile, her curiosity and thirst for knowledge,
31	32		and her enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; and
32	33		WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother,
33	34		and she leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by
34	35		her family and friends; now, therefore, be it
35	36		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
36	37		Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
37	38		condolences to the bereaved family of Letitia Washington
38	39		Plummer; and, be it further
39	40		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
40	41		her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
41	42		Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
42	43		memory of Letitia Plummer.
