55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Dallas in mourning the loss of Ora Mae Thomas, who
77 died August 24, 2021, at the age of 99; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of Waskom, this distinguished Texan was
99 born to Steve and Georgia Moody on October 6, 1921; and
1010 WHEREAS, Ora earned a bachelor of science degree from
1111 Bishop College and a master of education degree from Prairie View
1212 A&M University; she received multiple honors for professional
1313 excellence during her 38-year career in education, and she
1414 further expressed her love of teaching by serving as an
1515 after-school tutor and as a Sunday school teacher; she was also a
1616 general Sunday school superintendent; and
1717 WHEREAS, A woman of great faith and spiritual devotion, Ora
1818 was a respected member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church; she
1919 participated in the Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Discussion Group,
2020 and she enjoyed hosting Bible studies for the sick and needy; and
2121 WHEREAS, This beloved community steward gave generously of
2222 her time to a number of civic and charitable groups; she was a
2323 volunteer at the Veterans' Hospital and the Dallas Public
2424 Library, and her accolades include a 2002 Community Service Award
2525 bestowed by the Senior Affairs Commission of Dallas; and
2626 WHEREAS, Ora Thomas was the devoted mother of two
2727 daughters, and she was blessed with four grandchildren and a
2828 great-grandson; she was a cherished matriarch and an esteemed
2929 member of her community, and she will long be remembered with
3030 respect and admiration by all who were privileged to share in her
3131 life; now, therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
3333 Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
3434 condolences to the bereaved family of Ora Mae Thomas; and, be it
3535 further
3636 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3737 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3838 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
3939 memory of Ora Thomas.
