55 WHEREAS, Dr. Steven Michael Weinberg of Colleyville passed
66 away on August 20, 2021, at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy
77 of achievement that will be cherished for years to come; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Harry and Evelyn Weinberg, Steve
99 Weinberg was born in Fort Benning, Georgia, on December 4, 1942,
1010 and his family also included his brother, Gary; he graduated from
1111 high school in Davenport, Iowa, in 1960 and then enrolled at the
1212 University of Oklahoma; he went on to earn his medical degree
1313 from the University of Iowa and to train at The University of
1414 Texas Southwestern Medical Center; and
1515 WHEREAS, In the course of his distinguished career in
1616 medicine, Dr. Weinberg practiced as a general surgeon and served
1717 with the U.S. Air Force as chief of surgical services at Ramey Air
1818 Force Base, and he shared his knowledge as a clinical assistant
1919 professor of surgery at the UT Southwestern Medical School and as
2020 an adjunct professor of ethics at the University of North Texas
2121 Health Science Center; in 2001, he was appointed by President
2222 George W. Bush as associate director and acting medical director
2323 of the Peace Corps, a position he held for five years; and
2424 WHEREAS, Known for his keen intellect, Dr. Weinberg
2525 embarked on a second career as an attorney after obtaining a law
2626 degree from Southern Methodist University; he also owned and
2727 operated companies in such fields as oil and gas exploration and
2828 production, commercial and residential real estate development,
2929 and cattle feeding and ranching; in addition, he was appointed to
3030 the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission in 2007 and reappointed
3131 in 2012; and
3232 WHEREAS, Dr. Weinberg was active in many professional
3333 organizations, and his civic involvement included tenures as
3434 president of the Rotary Club of Hurst-Euless-Bedford and as a
3535 member of the State Republican Executive Committee; a man of
3636 faith, he belonged to the First Baptist Euless and First
3737 Colleyville congregations, and he participated in mission trips
3838 to Honduras, Haiti, and Africa; and
3939 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Dr. Weinberg treasured the
4040 love and support of his wife, Vicki, with whom he shared a
4141 rewarding marriage of nearly 40 years; he was the devoted father
4242 of three children, Michael, Shannon, and Joshua, and he took
4343 great pride in his six grandchildren, Ella, Ava May, Collins,
4444 Hudson, Campbell, and Cobbs; in his leisure time, he pursued his
4545 passions for golf, hunting, fishing, and making pies, and he
4646 loved music from the 1950s; and
4747 WHEREAS, Steve Weinberg distinguished himself as a true
4848 Renaissance man, and his loss is keenly felt by the numerous
4949 friends that he made through the years as well as by the many
5050 people in Texas and beyond whose lives he enriched; now,
5151 therefore, be it
5252 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
5353 Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
5454 of Dr. Steven Michael Weinberg and extend heartfelt sympathy to
5555 his relatives and friends; and, be it further
5656 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
5757 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
5858 this day, it do so in memory of Steve Weinberg.
