56 WHEREAS, Kenneth M. Jastrow II and Susan Thomas Jastrow have
67 been recognized with the Santa Rita Award for their exceptional
78 commitment to The University of Texas at Austin; and
89 WHEREAS, Established in 1968, the Santa Rita Award is the
910 highest honor bestowed by the UT System Board of Regents; the award
1011 is given to individuals or organizations whose philanthropy and
1112 service have greatly furthered the mission of UT institutions and
1213 the cause of higher education; and
1314 WHEREAS, Kenny Jastrow is the former chair and CEO of
1415 Temple-Inland, Inc.; he has served his alma mater, UT Austin,
1516 through leadership roles on a number of boards, commissions, and
1617 committees, including as chair of the historic Commission of 125,
1718 which was created to commemorate the campus's 125th anniversary,
1819 and as chair of the $3 billion Campaign for Texas in 2013; he
1920 recently led the Special Advisory Committee for UT Austin's
2021 presidential search that resulted in the appointment of President
2122 Jay Hartzell; and
2223 WHEREAS, Over the years, Mr. Jastrow has been presented with
2324 such accolades as the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the Presidential
2425 Citation, the Mirabeau B. Lamar Medal, and the Legion of Honor Award
2526 by Phi Delta Theta, in addition to being inducted into the McCombs
2627 School of Business's Hall of Fame; and
2728 WHEREAS, Susie Jastrow, a registered dietitian and diabetes
2829 educator, is the founder of the Nutrition Education Program within
2930 People's Community Clinic, a health care provider for uninsured and
3031 medically underserved residents of Austin; she was also
3132 instrumental in the establishment of the UT Austin Nutrition
3233 Institute, and she has given generously of her time to the Blanton
3334 Museum of Art National Leadership Board, the Natural Sciences
3435 Foundation Advisory Council, and the Human Ecology School Advisory
3536 Council; and
3637 WHEREAS, Recognized as Alumna of the Year by the Texas Exes in
3738 2006, Ms. Jastrow was also honored with its Community Service Award
3839 in Human Ecology, and in 2017, the Susie Jastrow Teaching Kitchen
3940 was dedicated on the campus at UT Austin; together with
4041 Mr. Jastrow, she takes special pride in having launched Subiendo:
4142 The Academy for Rising Leaders, a youth leadership program that is
4243 hosted by the McCombs School; and
4344 WHEREAS, Through their tremendous generosity and support for
4445 The University of Texas at Austin, Kenneth and Susan Jastrow have
4546 elevated its reputation as a world-class center of higher learning,
4647 and they are indeed deserving recipients of the UT System's most
4748 prestigious award; now, therefore, be it
4849 RESOLVED, That the 87th Legislature of the State of Texas,
4950 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Kenneth and Susan Jastrow
5051 on their receipt of the Santa Rita Award by The University of Texas
5152 System Board of Regents and extend to them sincere appreciation for
5253 their far-reaching contributions; and, be it further
5354 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5455 prepared for the Jastrows as an expression of high regard by the
5556 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
