45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The Arlington Independence Day Parade is the oldest
67 and longest-running citywide event in the community, and over the
78 years, it has become a highly anticipated local tradition; and
89 WHEREAS, Started by Dottie Lynn and Church Women United in
910 1965, the first parade was a charming, homespun affair featuring
1011 children on bicycles decorated with red, white, and blue, riding
1112 through Randol Mill Park; and
1213 WHEREAS, In the decades since, the event has grown into a
1314 grand, two-mile parade that winds through Arlington's downtown as
1415 well as the College Park District at The University of Texas at
1516 Arlington; the parade's more than 150 entries include homemade and
1617 professionally built floats created by businesses, nonprofit
1718 organizations, churches, and youth groups, accompanied by the
1819 stirring rhythm of marching bands from the city's high schools; and
1920 WHEREAS, The parade is organized by the Arlington 4th of July
2021 Association, and it benefits from the generosity of its sponsors;
2122 drawing some 75,000 spectators, the event has featured many notable
2223 local celebrities as grand marshal, and each year, the parade is
2324 dedicated to a different area organization or group, such as UTA
2425 alumni, the Boy Scouts, the Red Cross, and the men and women of our
2526 country's armed forces; and
2627 WHEREAS, For more than a half century, the Arlington
2728 Independence Day Parade has provided a festive opportunity for area
2829 residents to express their patriotism and celebrate our nation's
2930 founding in the company of their fellow citizens; now, therefore,
3031 be it
3132 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3233 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby recognize the annual
3334 Arlington Independence Day Parade and extend to all those
3435 associated with the event sincere best wishes for the future.
