45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The 1st Cavalry Division of the U.S. Army celebrated
67 its 100th anniversary in September 2021, providing a fitting
78 opportunity to pay tribute to the history of this legendary
89 American fighting force; and
910 WHEREAS, The 1st Cavalry Division was established on
1011 September 13, 1921, at Fort Bliss in El Paso; early in its history,
1112 the soldiers of the unit patrolled the Mexican border on horseback,
1213 but by World War II, the division was part of a modern, mechanized
1314 army; it took part in jungle and amphibious warfare in the South
1415 Pacific, at Los Negros Island and in the Philippines, and in
1516 February 1945, it was the first American unit to enter Manila; the
1617 division went on to spend five years in Japan as part of the
1718 occupation forces; and
1819 WHEREAS, During the Korean War, the 1st Cavalry Division came
1920 ashore in the first amphibious landing and fought north of the 38th
2021 parallel, reaching Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea; the unit
2122 took part in 549 days of continuous combat, and 11 troopers received
2223 the Medal of Honor for their heroism; the division returned to Korea
2324 in 1957 and helped patrol the demilitarized zone until July 1965,
2425 when it left for Fort Benning, Georgia; and
2526 WHEREAS, The division served as an airmobile force in
2627 Vietnam, where it earned the Presidential Unit Citation during the
2728 Pleiku campaign; it later helped liberate cities in the aftermath
2829 of the Tet Offensive, and the division's skytroopers relieved the
2930 besieged marines at Khe Sanh; during the Vietnam War, 30 more of the
3031 division's soldiers earned the Medal of Honor; and
3132 WHEREAS, Starting in 1971, the 1st Cavalry Division was based
3233 at Fort Hood, and in 1990 and 1991, it took part in Operations
3334 Desert Shield and Desert Storm, pushing some 300 kilometers into
3435 Iraq; in 1998, the division supported peacekeeping efforts in
3536 Bosnia and Herzegovina, and between 2003 and 2011, the unit served
3637 multiple deployments to Iraq, where its duties included helping to
3738 oversee national elections, assuming command of Multinational
3839 Division Bagdad, and training Iraqi security forces; and
3940 WHEREAS, During the war in Afghanistan, the division took
4041 control of more than 35,000 international troops over 14 provinces
4142 that were home to approximately 7.5 million Afghans, and it also
4243 assisted in training Afghan security forces; since 2015, the
4344 division has seen service in Korea and seven European countries,
4445 training with allied forces and helping to deter aggression; and
4546 WHEREAS, Known as America's First Team, the 1st Cavalry
4647 Division represents some of the finest men and women in our nation's
4748 military, and all those who have served in the unit, past and
4849 present, may indeed take great pride in its storied history; now,
4950 therefore, be it
5051 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
5152 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the centennial
5253 of the 1st Cavalry Division and extend to the troopers of the
5354 division sincere best wishes for continued success in their
5455 important work; and, be it further
5556 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5657 prepared for the 1st Cavalry Division as an expression of high
5758 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
