45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their memories
67 of Phillip J. Gerik of Waco, who passed away on December 21, 2020,
78 at the age of 71; and
89 WHEREAS, Phil Gerik was born to John and JoAnn Gerik on
910 October 1, 1949, in Waco and grew up with a sister, Karen, and three
1011 brothers, Tom, Mike, and John; a graduate of West High School, he
1112 continued his education at Lamar University, where he earned an
1213 undergraduate degree in kinesiology, and he went on to complete a
1314 master's degree in educational administration and superintendency
1415 at East Texas State University in Commerce; and
1516 WHEREAS, In the course of his 48 years in education,
1617 Mr. Gerik served as a teacher and coach in the Mesquite and
1718 Northside school districts and as an athletic director and
1819 principal in the West Independent School District; he also led
1920 Mount Calm ISD as its superintendent, and he most recently held the
2021 role of field service agent for Education Service Center Region 12;
2122 he further contributed to his profession as president of both the
2223 National and Texas Rural Education Associations; and
2324 WHEREAS, Valuing family above all else, Mr. Gerik shared
2425 nearly half a century of marriage with his wife, Cathy, and he was a
2526 devoted father to their children, Matthew and Pam; with the passing
2627 years, he had the pleasure of seeing his family grow to include two
2728 grandchildren, McKinley and Mason; and
2829 WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known Phil Gerik will
2930 remember the way he touched their lives with his kindness,
3031 generosity, and delightful sense of humor, and he will forever hold
3132 a treasured place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
3233 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3334 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
3435 of Phillip J. Gerik and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn
3536 his passing; and, be it further
3637 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3738 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
3839 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Phil Gerik.
