5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their memories |

6 | 7 | | of Phillip J. Gerik of Waco, who passed away on December 21, 2020, |

7 | 8 | | at the age of 71; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Phil Gerik was born to John and JoAnn Gerik on |
---|
9 | 10 | | October 1, 1949, in Waco and grew up with a sister, Karen, and three |
---|
10 | 11 | | brothers, Tom, Mike, and John; a graduate of West High School, he |
---|
11 | 12 | | continued his education at Lamar University, where he earned an |
---|
12 | 13 | | undergraduate degree in kinesiology, and he went on to complete a |
---|
13 | 14 | | master's degree in educational administration and superintendency |
---|
14 | 15 | | at East Texas State University in Commerce; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In the course of his 48 years in education, |
---|
16 | 17 | | Mr. Gerik served as a teacher and coach in the Mesquite and |
---|
17 | 18 | | Northside school districts and as an athletic director and |
---|
18 | 19 | | principal in the West Independent School District; he also led |
---|
19 | 20 | | Mount Calm ISD as its superintendent, and he most recently held the |
---|
20 | 21 | | role of field service agent for Education Service Center Region 12; |
---|
21 | 22 | | he further contributed to his profession as president of both the |
---|
22 | 23 | | National and Texas Rural Education Associations; and |
---|
23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Valuing family above all else, Mr. Gerik shared |
---|
24 | 25 | | nearly half a century of marriage with his wife, Cathy, and he was a |
---|
25 | 26 | | devoted father to their children, Matthew and Pam; with the passing |
---|
26 | 27 | | years, he had the pleasure of seeing his family grow to include two |
---|
27 | 28 | | grandchildren, McKinley and Mason; and |
---|
28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known Phil Gerik will |
---|
29 | 30 | | remember the way he touched their lives with his kindness, |
---|
30 | 31 | | generosity, and delightful sense of humor, and he will forever hold |
---|
31 | 32 | | a treasured place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

33 | 34 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |

34 | 35 | | of Phillip J. Gerik and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn |
