45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Residents of Corpus Christi lost an admired civic
67 leader with the passing of Lena D. Wilson on September 8, 2021, at
78 the age of 91; and
89 WHEREAS, The daughter of Dovie Sutton and Albert Satterwhite,
910 the former Lena Delores Satterwhite was born in Gonzales County on
1011 August 31, 1930; she grew up in Seguin and demonstrated a strong
1112 work ethic as a young girl, bussing tables at a hotel café and
1213 holding down a job at a dry cleaners; after graduating from
1314 Lincoln-Ball High School in 1949, she completed nursing school, but
1415 she left that field to earn a master's degree in business; she owned
1516 a popular restaurant and music venue before focusing her career on
1617 social services; and
1718 WHEREAS, In 1976, she moved to Corpus Christi, where she
1819 established herself as an entrepreneur, owning such businesses as
1920 the Unity Chapel Funeral Home; she married Frank Alfred Wilson and
2021 devoted herself to their treasured family, including twin daughters
2122 Lana and Dana and son Al; and
2223 WHEREAS, Mrs. Wilson became executive director of HIALCO, a
2324 community service agency, and then director of mental retardation
2425 vocational services for the Nueces County MHMR Community Center; a
2526 pioneer in vocational education, she was also instrumental in the
2627 establishment of two residential homes for people with
2728 disabilities, Elliott Grant Homes and Jefferine Lytle Estates; she
2829 eventually launched her own company, Lena's Business Management and
2930 Consultants, as well as the nonprofit LC Foundation, which helps
3031 individuals with disabilities find permanent jobs; its initiatives
3132 have further included creation of the Lena Coleman-Wilson Hope
3233 Scholarship at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, holiday
3334 donations to children, and contributions to a local group
3435 alleviating hunger; deeply committed to education, Mrs. Wilson
3536 also funded the Lena D. Wilson Visionary Legacy Scholarship at
3637 Lincoln-Ball High School; she was a member of the League of Women
3738 Voters and president emeritus of the H. Boyd Hall branch of the
3839 NAACP, and she held leadership roles with such organizations as the
3940 United Way and the local chamber of commerce; and
4041 WHEREAS, A woman of faith, Mrs. Wilson attended church
4142 services regularly; she eventually retired to Schertz, closer to
4243 her home congregation, New St. James Baptist Church in Seguin; and
4344 WHEREAS, Lena Wilson gave freely of her time, resources, and
4445 expertise to better her community, and her contributions will be
4546 remembered and admired for years to come; now, therefore, be it
4647 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4748 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
4849 Lena D. Wilson and extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn her
4950 passing; and, be it further
5051 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5152 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5253 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Lena D.
