5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Corpus Christi lost an admired civic |

6 | 7 | | leader with the passing of Lena D. Wilson on September 8, 2021, at |

7 | 8 | | the age of 91; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Dovie Sutton and Albert Satterwhite, |
---|
9 | 10 | | the former Lena Delores Satterwhite was born in Gonzales County on |
---|
10 | 11 | | August 31, 1930; she grew up in Seguin and demonstrated a strong |
---|
11 | 12 | | work ethic as a young girl, bussing tables at a hotel café and |
---|
12 | 13 | | holding down a job at a dry cleaners; after graduating from |
---|
13 | 14 | | Lincoln-Ball High School in 1949, she completed nursing school, but |
---|
14 | 15 | | she left that field to earn a master's degree in business; she owned |
---|
15 | 16 | | a popular restaurant and music venue before focusing her career on |
---|
16 | 17 | | social services; and |
---|
17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, In 1976, she moved to Corpus Christi, where she |
---|
18 | 19 | | established herself as an entrepreneur, owning such businesses as |
---|
19 | 20 | | the Unity Chapel Funeral Home; she married Frank Alfred Wilson and |
---|
20 | 21 | | devoted herself to their treasured family, including twin daughters |
---|
21 | 22 | | Lana and Dana and son Al; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Wilson became executive director of HIALCO, a |
---|
23 | 24 | | community service agency, and then director of mental retardation |
---|
24 | 25 | | vocational services for the Nueces County MHMR Community Center; a |
---|
25 | 26 | | pioneer in vocational education, she was also instrumental in the |
---|
26 | 27 | | establishment of two residential homes for people with |
---|
27 | 28 | | disabilities, Elliott Grant Homes and Jefferine Lytle Estates; she |
---|
28 | 29 | | eventually launched her own company, Lena's Business Management and |
---|
29 | 30 | | Consultants, as well as the nonprofit LC Foundation, which helps |
---|
30 | 31 | | individuals with disabilities find permanent jobs; its initiatives |
---|
31 | 32 | | have further included creation of the Lena Coleman-Wilson Hope |
---|
32 | 33 | | Scholarship at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, holiday |
---|
33 | 34 | | donations to children, and contributions to a local group |
---|
34 | 35 | | alleviating hunger; deeply committed to education, Mrs. Wilson |
---|
35 | 36 | | also funded the Lena D. Wilson Visionary Legacy Scholarship at |

36 | 37 | | Lincoln-Ball High School; she was a member of the League of Women |
---|
37 | 38 | | Voters and president emeritus of the H. Boyd Hall branch of the |
---|
38 | 39 | | NAACP, and she held leadership roles with such organizations as the |
---|
39 | 40 | | United Way and the local chamber of commerce; and |
---|
40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, A woman of faith, Mrs. Wilson attended church |
---|
41 | 42 | | services regularly; she eventually retired to Schertz, closer to |
---|
42 | 43 | | her home congregation, New St. James Baptist Church in Seguin; and |
---|
43 | 44 | | WHEREAS, Lena Wilson gave freely of her time, resources, and |
---|
44 | 45 | | expertise to better her community, and her contributions will be |
---|
45 | 46 | | remembered and admired for years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
47 | 48 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of |
---|
48 | 49 | | Lena D. Wilson and extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn her |
---|
49 | 50 | | passing; and, be it further |
---|
50 | 51 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
51 | 52 | | prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
52 | 53 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Lena D. |
