| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The U.S. Army 3rd Cavalry Regiment is marking the |

| 6 | 7 | | 175th anniversary of its founding in 2021, providing a fitting |

| 7 | 8 | | opportunity to pay tribute to this historic unit; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Stationed at Fort Hood in Killeen since 2006, the |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | 3rd Cavalry Regiment is the only heavy Armored Cavalry Regiment in |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | the U.S. Army; it traces its beginnings to May 19, 1846, when the |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | U.S. Congress authorized the establishment of a new military unit, |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen; the regiment was soon deployed |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | for the Mexican-American War, and it was during this conflict that |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | it earned its moniker of "Brave Rifles" and its motto of "Blood and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | Steel"; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Assigned to Major General Winfield Scott's army, the |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | riflemen saw combat in the Mexico City campaign at the Battle of |

| 18 | 19 | | Cerro Gordo in April 1847; on September 13 of that year, elements of |

| 19 | 20 | | the regiment made up the storming party on the fortress of |

| 20 | 21 | | Chapultepec outside the enemy capital; the next morning, the |

| 21 | 22 | | victorious unit raised the United States flag over the National |

| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, At the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, the |

| 24 | 25 | | Regiment of Mounted Riflemen was redesignated as the 3rd United |

| 25 | 26 | | States Cavalry Regiment; in December 1862, the unit joined the |

| 26 | 27 | | Civil War Western Theater in Tennessee, and members of the 3rd |

| 27 | 28 | | Cavalry also fought in Mississippi, Alabama, and North Carolina, |

| 28 | 29 | | participating in the Chattanooga Campaign; at the conflict's end, |

| 39 | 40 | | garrison activities in the U.S. and took on the 3rd Armored Cavalry |

| 42 | 43 | | readiness throughout the Cold War, and in 1990, it was sent overseas |

| 44 | 45 | | next year and in 1996 moved to Fort Carson in Colorado, where it was |

| 45 | 46 | | headquartered until making its home at Fort Hood; and |

| 46 | 47 | | WHEREAS, Among its many important missions, the 3rd Cavalry |

| 47 | 48 | | Regiment has seen extensive action in modern-day conflicts, |

| 48 | 49 | | including the Persian Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom; today, |

| 49 | 50 | | the unit is a highly mobile force that conducts reconnaissance, |

| 50 | 51 | | security, offensive, and defensive operations; and |

| 51 | 52 | | WHEREAS, For 175 years, the 3rd Cavalry Regiment has |

| 52 | 53 | | exemplified the highest ideals of the United States armed forces, |

| 54 | 55 | | worthy of our appreciation; now, therefore, be it |
