45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The U.S. Army 3rd Cavalry Regiment is marking the
67 175th anniversary of its founding in 2021, providing a fitting
78 opportunity to pay tribute to this historic unit; and
89 WHEREAS, Stationed at Fort Hood in Killeen since 2006, the
910 3rd Cavalry Regiment is the only heavy Armored Cavalry Regiment in
1011 the U.S. Army; it traces its beginnings to May 19, 1846, when the
1112 U.S. Congress authorized the establishment of a new military unit,
1213 the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen; the regiment was soon deployed
1314 for the Mexican-American War, and it was during this conflict that
1415 it earned its moniker of "Brave Rifles" and its motto of "Blood and
1516 Steel"; and
1617 WHEREAS, Assigned to Major General Winfield Scott's army, the
1718 riflemen saw combat in the Mexico City campaign at the Battle of
1819 Cerro Gordo in April 1847; on September 13 of that year, elements of
1920 the regiment made up the storming party on the fortress of
2021 Chapultepec outside the enemy capital; the next morning, the
2122 victorious unit raised the United States flag over the National
2223 Palace; and
2324 WHEREAS, At the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, the
2425 Regiment of Mounted Riflemen was redesignated as the 3rd United
2526 States Cavalry Regiment; in December 1862, the unit joined the
2627 Civil War Western Theater in Tennessee, and members of the 3rd
2728 Cavalry also fought in Mississippi, Alabama, and North Carolina,
2829 participating in the Chattanooga Campaign; at the conflict's end,
2930 the regiment was sent to New Mexico to help settle the frontier and
3031 to lend its support during the Indian Wars; and
3132 WHEREAS, During the Spanish-American War in 1898, the 3rd
3233 Cavalry played a key role in the attacks on San Juan and Kettle Hill
3334 and placed the first American flag at the points of victory; at the
3435 outbreak of World War I, the regiment transferred to Europe, and its
3536 squadrons operated remount depots; and
3637 WHEREAS, The regiment was renamed the 3rd Cavalry Group
3738 (Mechanized) during World War II; landing in France in August 1944,
3839 it spearheaded the XX Corps; the group subsequently resumed its
3940 garrison activities in the U.S. and took on the 3rd Armored Cavalry
4041 Regiment title; and
4142 WHEREAS, The unit was a major part of American military
4243 readiness throughout the Cold War, and in 1990, it was sent overseas
4344 as part of the XVIII Airborne Corps; it deployed to the U.S. the
4445 next year and in 1996 moved to Fort Carson in Colorado, where it was
4546 headquartered until making its home at Fort Hood; and
4647 WHEREAS, Among its many important missions, the 3rd Cavalry
4748 Regiment has seen extensive action in modern-day conflicts,
4849 including the Persian Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom; today,
4950 the unit is a highly mobile force that conducts reconnaissance,
5051 security, offensive, and defensive operations; and
5152 WHEREAS, For 175 years, the 3rd Cavalry Regiment has
5253 exemplified the highest ideals of the United States armed forces,
5354 and the many brave men and women who have served the unit are indeed
5455 worthy of our appreciation; now, therefore, be it
5556 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
5657 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 175th
5758 anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Army 3rd Cavalry Regiment
5859 and extend to all of its members sincere best wishes for the future;
5960 and, be it further
6061 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6162 prepared for the 3rd Cavalry Regiment as an expression of high
6263 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
