45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Alicia Roth Weigel has been a leader in the fight for
67 social justice for members of the LGBTQIA+ communities in Texas,
78 and her efforts have made a positive difference in numerous lives;
89 and
910 WHEREAS, A member of the City of Austin's Human Rights
1011 Commission, Ms. Weigel works with her colleagues to ensure that
1112 area residents are free from discrimination on the basis of race,
1213 disability, religion, national origin, gender, sex, or age; the
1314 commission provides valuable advice on such matters and assists in
1415 developing nondiscrimination policies, investigating complaints,
1516 and conducting educational programs; and
1617 WHEREAS, Ms. Weigel is an eloquent champion of the rights and
1718 well-being of intersex people; her advocacy was instrumental in the
1819 Austin City Council's proclamation of October 26, 2019, as Intersex
1920 Awareness Day, and she is spearheading the drive for Austin to
2021 become the first city in the South to adopt an intersex protective
2122 policy condemning nonconsensual and medically unnecessary
2223 surgeries on intersex kids and implementing a public education
2324 campaign on intersex health care; and
2425 WHEREAS, A graduate of Cornell University, Ms. Weigel helped
2526 launch Deeds Not Words, a progressive women's leadership
2627 organization, in 2016; as its strategy and communications director,
2728 and then as its policy and advocacy director, she traveled the
2829 country to speak at conferences, conduct corporate workshops in
2930 gender equity, and train young people in legislative advocacy; she
3031 went on to become an advocacy strategist for interACT, a nonprofit
3132 organization that promotes the legal and human rights of intersex
3233 children; in addition, she managed the campaign of the first openly
3334 transgender woman candidate for Austin's city council; she received
3435 the 2019 Ceci Gratias Guardian Award from the Austin LGBT Chamber of
3536 Commerce; and
3637 WHEREAS, Through her tireless endeavors, Alicia Weigel has
3738 helped further inclusion and equality in the Lone Star State, and
3839 she may indeed reflect with pride on her outstanding contributions;
3940 now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4142 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend Alicia Roth Weigel
4243 for her service to the LGBTQIA+ communities of Texas and extend to
4344 her sincere best wishes for continued success in her important
4445 work; and, be it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for Ms. Weigel as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4748 House of Representatives.
