| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, An inspiring couple whose lives have been enhanced |

| 6 | 7 | | by a great and enduring love, Wilbert and Mary Cardenas of Weslaco |

| 7 | 8 | | celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 26, 2021; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Wilbert Clark Cardenas and the former Maria Eden |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Castañeda met in junior high and went on their first date while in |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | high school, attending the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show on |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | March 20, 1966; they were united in matrimony at St. Joan of Arc |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Catholic Church in Weslaco in 1971; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cardenas served in the U.S. National Guard from |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | 1969 to 1975, and he enjoyed a successful 52-year career with H-E-B, |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | where he was employed as a produce manager until his retirement in |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | 2017; a certified ophthalmic technician, Mrs. Cardenas worked in |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | that capacity for four decades before transitioning to internal |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | medicine in 2011; she retired in 2020; and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, the couple has been very active |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | in the St. Joan of Arc and St. Pius X Catholic Churches, serving in |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | many capacities, including as Eucharistic ministers and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | confirmation catechists; moreover, Mr. Cardenas has been a member |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | of the Knights of Columbus, holding the titles of district deputy |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | and district master in the fourth degree; Mrs. Cardenas used her |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | professional skills to assist with eye surgeries in Mexico through |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | the Medical Group Missions organization; and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Cardenas are devoted to a fine family |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | that includes 30 nieces and nephews; in addition, they have more |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | than 30 godchildren; and |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, While much has changed in the world over the past |

| 31 | 32 | | half-century, Wilbert and Mary Cardenas have remained constant in |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | their commitment to each other, and the strength of their love is a |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | source of inspiration to all who are privileged to know them; now, |

| 35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 36 | 37 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Wilbert and |

| 37 | 38 | | Mary Cardenas on their 50th wedding anniversary and extend to them |
