| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Kai Shappley of Austin has distinguished herself |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A clear and thoughtful communicator with maturity |

| 9 | 10 | | beyond her 10 years, Kai has already taken part in numerous |

| 10 | 11 | | committee hearings of the Texas Legislature; in 2017, she joined |

| 11 | 12 | | her mother, Kimberly Shappley, in speaking out against bills that |

| 12 | 13 | | would have banned transgender people from accessing restrooms that |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | match their gender identity; in April 2021, during the 87th Regular |

| 14 | 15 | | Session, Kai offered valuable input on Senate Bills 1311 and 1646, |

| 15 | 16 | | which sought to prevent transgender youth from receiving |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | gender-affirming health care, as well as Senate Bill 29, which |

| 17 | 18 | | sought to limit transgender students' participation on sports |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | teams; moreover, she has raised awareness on a national level by |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | sharing her story in an award-winning documentary; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Kai has further distinguished herself through her |

| 21 | 22 | | work as an actor in the Netflix series The Baby-Sitters Club; she is |

| 22 | 23 | | currently attending the fifth grade, and her favorite subjects are |

| 23 | 24 | | math, science, and geology; in her free time, she enjoys playing |

| 24 | 25 | | with her cats, Jake and Serenity, and listening to the music of |

| 25 | 26 | | Dolly Parton; and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, By courageously speaking out on urgent legislative |

| 27 | 28 | | issues, Kai Shappley has helped ensure that the voices of |

| 28 | 29 | | transgender youth will not be silenced, and she is a source of |

| 29 | 30 | | inspiration to numerous people in the Lone Star State and beyond; |
