5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Nordheim are celebrating the |

6 | 7 | | 125th anniversary of the founding of their community, and this |

7 | 8 | | occasion is indeed deserving of special recognition; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, In 1895, H. Runge and Company of Cuero laid out a |
---|
9 | 10 | | townsite seven miles west of Yorktown on the San Antonio and Aransas |
---|
10 | 11 | | Pass Railway and sold the first block to Henry Schlosser Jr., who |
---|
11 | 12 | | later became the first postmaster; originally known as Weldon |
---|
12 | 13 | | Switch, the town's name was changed in 1897, when William Frobese, |
---|
13 | 14 | | president of Runge and Company, suggested that the community be |
---|
14 | 15 | | named Nordheim after his hometown in Germany; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The town flourished as an important center for |
---|
16 | 17 | | poultry farming as well as for shipping cotton, truck crops, and |
---|
17 | 18 | | lumber, and by 1915, the population grew to 400; a number of |
---|
18 | 19 | | businesses were established during the early years of the 1900s, |
---|
19 | 20 | | including a hotel, a bank, a newspaper, canning and hosiery |
---|
20 | 21 | | factories, and a number of saloons; residents also founded the |
---|
21 | 22 | | Nordheim Brass Band and such German social organizations as the |
---|
22 | 23 | | Schuetzen Verein shooting club, the Fortschritt theater club, and a |
---|
23 | 24 | | Sons of Hermann Lodge; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, In 1927, the town contained 600 people, and that |
---|
25 | 26 | | same year the Nordheim Independent School District was established; |
---|
26 | 27 | | three years later, a devastating tornado struck the city, killing |
---|
27 | 28 | | 18 people, but area residents persevered and rebuilt; today, |
---|
28 | 29 | | Nordheim retains its quiet charm and characteristic German |
---|
29 | 30 | | heritage, which are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike; and |

30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Working to preserve their town's rich history as |
---|
31 | 32 | | they build an even brighter future, the citizens of Nordheim may |
---|
32 | 33 | | indeed take great pride in their community as they celebrate this |
---|
33 | 34 | | milestone in its history; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
35 | 36 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 125th |
---|
36 | 37 | | anniversary of Nordheim and extend to its residents sincere best |

37 | 38 | | wishes for the future. |
