45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The Fort Worth community lost an admired businessman
67 and philanthropist with the passing of Ed Schollmaier on September
78 16, 2021, at the age of 87; and
89 WHEREAS, The son of German immigrants, Ed Schollmaier was
910 born in Cincinnati in 1933; while earning his bachelor's degree at
1011 the University of Cincinnati, he met his future wife, Rae, and the
1112 couple exchanged wedding vows in 1954; and
1213 WHEREAS, After receiving his master's degree from Harvard
1314 Business School, Mr. Schollmaier began his business career in
1415 Pittsburgh with a sales position at Alcon; in 1961, he transferred
1516 to Fort Worth, where the company's headquarters was located, and
1617 the city would become his family's adopted home; he was appointed
1718 president of Alcon and went on to serve as CEO from 1972 to 1997,
1819 helping the company grow into a global leader in eye care; and
1920 WHEREAS, Mr. Schollmaier and his wife established the
2021 Schollmaier Foundation, which gives generously to a host of causes
2122 in the arts, education, and health services; he was also a driving
2223 force in the expansion of Texas Christian University, where he
2324 served on the board of trustees for 25 years; in addition, the
2425 Schollmaiers donated the lead gift for the $72 million renovation
2526 of the university's basketball arena, which is named in their
2627 honor; over the years, Mr. Schollmaier received a multitude of
2728 accolades, including the 2015 Golden Deeds Award from the Exchange
2829 Club of Fort Worth as well as awards from TCU, Texas Wesleyan
2930 University, and the University of Cincinnati; and
3031 WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Schollmaier shared more than six
3132 decades of marriage before her death in 2015; they were loving
3233 parents to their son, Taylor, and with the passing years, their
3334 family grew to include two grandchildren, Elsa and Teo; and
3435 WHEREAS, Although the loss of Ed Schollmaier has brought deep
3536 sorrow to all who shared in his love and friendship, he leaves
3637 behind a legacy of good works that will continue to resonate in the
3738 years to come; now, therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3940 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
4041 Ed Schollmaier and extend sincere sympathy to his family and
4142 friends; and, be it further
4243 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4344 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4445 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ed
4546 Schollmaier.
