5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Fort Worth community lost an admired businessman |

6 | 7 | | and philanthropist with the passing of Ed Schollmaier on September |

7 | 8 | | 16, 2021, at the age of 87; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The son of German immigrants, Ed Schollmaier was |
---|
9 | 10 | | born in Cincinnati in 1933; while earning his bachelor's degree at |
---|
10 | 11 | | the University of Cincinnati, he met his future wife, Rae, and the |
---|
11 | 12 | | couple exchanged wedding vows in 1954; and |
---|
12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, After receiving his master's degree from Harvard |
---|
13 | 14 | | Business School, Mr. Schollmaier began his business career in |
---|
14 | 15 | | Pittsburgh with a sales position at Alcon; in 1961, he transferred |
---|
15 | 16 | | to Fort Worth, where the company's headquarters was located, and |
---|
16 | 17 | | the city would become his family's adopted home; he was appointed |
---|
17 | 18 | | president of Alcon and went on to serve as CEO from 1972 to 1997, |
---|
18 | 19 | | helping the company grow into a global leader in eye care; and |
---|
19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Schollmaier and his wife established the |
---|
20 | 21 | | Schollmaier Foundation, which gives generously to a host of causes |
---|
21 | 22 | | in the arts, education, and health services; he was also a driving |
---|
22 | 23 | | force in the expansion of Texas Christian University, where he |
---|
23 | 24 | | served on the board of trustees for 25 years; in addition, the |
---|
24 | 25 | | Schollmaiers donated the lead gift for the $72 million renovation |
---|
25 | 26 | | of the university's basketball arena, which is named in their |
---|
26 | 27 | | honor; over the years, Mr. Schollmaier received a multitude of |
---|
27 | 28 | | accolades, including the 2015 Golden Deeds Award from the Exchange |
---|
28 | 29 | | Club of Fort Worth as well as awards from TCU, Texas Wesleyan |
---|
29 | 30 | | University, and the University of Cincinnati; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Schollmaier shared more than six |
---|
31 | 32 | | decades of marriage before her death in 2015; they were loving |
---|
32 | 33 | | parents to their son, Taylor, and with the passing years, their |
---|
33 | 34 | | family grew to include two grandchildren, Elsa and Teo; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Although the loss of Ed Schollmaier has brought deep |
---|
35 | 36 | | sorrow to all who shared in his love and friendship, he leaves |
---|
36 | 37 | | behind a legacy of good works that will continue to resonate in the |
---|
37 | 38 | | years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
39 | 40 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of |
---|
40 | 41 | | Ed Schollmaier and extend sincere sympathy to his family and |
---|
41 | 42 | | friends; and, be it further |
---|
42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
43 | 44 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |

44 | 45 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ed |
