8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Bobby Lackey was born on October 14, 1937, to |

9 | 10 | | Charles and Rosie Lackey; he grew up in Weslaco, where he was an |
---|
10 | 11 | | all-state signal caller for the high school football team, leading |
---|
11 | 12 | | the Panthers to the state semifinals in 1955; he was also all-state |
---|
12 | 13 | | in basketball and excelled on the baseball diamond as well; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Continuing his gridiron career at The University of |
---|
14 | 15 | | Texas at Austin, Mr. Lackey started at quarterback under head coach |

15 | 16 | | Darrell Royal; in 1958, he was the hero in a dramatic 15-14 victory |

16 | 17 | | over the University of Oklahoma, throwing the tying touchdown pass, |

17 | 18 | | kicking the go-ahead extra point, and sealing the outcome with an |

18 | 19 | | interception on the Sooners' final drive that snapped their |

19 | 20 | | six-game winning streak over UT; still in uniform after the game, he |

27 | 28 | | raising their family; he embarked on a business career, working for |

28 | 29 | | his father-in-law at the J. S. McManus Produce Company, which he |

29 | 30 | | eventually owned and operated; he also presided over the Texas |

30 | 31 | | Fruit and Vegetable Association, held a longtime seat on the |

31 | 32 | | Freeport-McMoRan board, and opened the Lackey-Fisher Chevrolet |

32 | 33 | | dealership with his brother Joe; he retired in 2001; and |

33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, A prominent figure in the community, Mr. Lackey |

34 | 35 | | served on the Weslaco City Council and the Weslaco Independent |

35 | 36 | | School District board, which named its gymnasium and football |

36 | 37 | | stadium in his honor; he was recognized as the Man of the Year in |

37 | 38 | | Weslaco, and he was inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor, |

38 | 39 | | the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame, and the Texas High School |

39 | 40 | | Football Hall of Fame; and |

40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Lackey shared a rewarding marriage |

41 | 42 | | that spanned 63 years until her death in 2020; Mr. Lackey took great |

42 | 43 | | pride in his children, John, Lissa, and Mindy, and in his 9 |

43 | 44 | | grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and |

44 | 45 | | WHEREAS, Bobby Lackey distinguished himself as a gifted |

45 | 46 | | athlete, an accomplished business and civic leader, and a devoted |

46 | 47 | | family man, and his achievements will be admired for many years to |

47 | 48 | | come; now, therefore, be it |

48 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

49 | 50 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |

50 | 51 | | of Bobby Lee Lackey and extend heartfelt sympathy to all who mourn |

51 | 52 | | his passing; and, be it further |
