8 | 9 | | honored by the Black Academy of Arts and Letters in Dallas; and |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Cavin Yarbrough and Alisa Peoples first met as |

10 | 11 | | children, when they were both taking lessons from the same music |
---|
11 | 12 | | teacher in Dallas, and they also attended the same church, where |
---|
12 | 13 | | they each sang solos with the choir; steeped in gospel music, |
---|
13 | 14 | | Ms. Peoples performed with her family's group, the Peoples Singers, |
---|
14 | 15 | | and with a community choir, the Chorale Ensemble; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Yarbrough embarked on a career as a musician, |

16 | 17 | | touring with Leon Russell, playing keyboards and singing with the |

17 | 18 | | band Grand Theft, and performing as a backup singer for Robert, |

18 | 19 | | Ronnie, and Charlie Wilson of the Gap Band; and |

19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Returning to Dallas, Mr. Yarbrough reconnected with |

21 | 22 | | Wilson introduced them to Lonnie Simmons of Total Experience |

22 | 23 | | Records, and as Yarbrough and Peoples, the couple released five |

25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Released in 1981, Yarbrough and Peoples' biggest hit |

28 | 29 | | covered and sampled by such artists as TLC and Puff Daddy; it was |

31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Yarbrough and Ms. Peoples were married in 1987, |

34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, With their distinctive sound and infectious beat, |
