| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The community of Florence in Williamson County is |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | home to the Gault Archaeological Site, one of the oldest known |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | places of human habitation in North America; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The earliest presence of humans at the Gault site |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | has been dated to between 16,000 and 20,000 years ago, and artifacts |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | recovered there show a near-continuous occupation of the area by 23 |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | ancient cultures over the centuries; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Located in a valley along Buttermilk Creek, the site |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | proved an ideal place for settlement since it offered ancient |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | peoples an extraordinary combination of water, plentiful food, and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | large amounts of Edwards chert, a type of stone used to fashion |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | tools; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Archaeological research being conducted at the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Gault site is enabling anthropologists to gain a better |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | understanding of the early inhabitants of North America and to |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | develop new theories about when and how the continent was first |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | populated by humans; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, In addition to being one of the oldest |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | archaeological sites in North America, the Gault site is all the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | more unique for being located near a contemporary community, the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | city of Florence; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The Gault Archaeological Site is helping to rewrite |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | the history of the first peoples of the Americas, and the modern |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | citizens of Florence may indeed take great pride in their deep |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | connection to the earliest residents of the Lone Star State; now, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the 87th Legislature of the State of Texas, |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | 3rd Called Session, hereby designate the city of Florence as the |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | oldest community in Texas; and, be it further |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | passed by the legislature. |
