5+ SENATE RESOLUTION
26 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride
37 in paying tribute to Senator Jane Nelson for her 28 years of
48 pioneering leadership and exceptional service on behalf of Texas
59 citizens; and
610 WHEREAS, A widely respected and much beloved public
711 leader, Jane Nelson enjoyed careers as an educator and a
812 businesswoman before her election to the legislature to
9- represent Senate District 12; she has served the constituents
10- of the district's counties with integrity and dedication for 10
13+ represent Senate District 12; she has served the constituents of
14+ the district's counties with integrity and dedication for 10
1115 consecutive terms, and she is bringing to a close her
12- distinguished tenure as the longest-serving Republican
13- senator; and
16+ distinguished tenure as the longest-serving Republican senator;
17+ and
1418 WHEREAS, Jane Nelson first began serving the citizens of
1519 Texas in 1988, when she was elected to serve as a member of the
1620 Texas State Board of Education; in 1992, she became the 10th
1721 woman and the third Republican woman to be elected to the Texas
1822 Senate; six years later, Senator Nelson became the first
1923 Republican woman to chair a Senate standing committee when she
2024 was appointed chair of the Committee on Health Services, and in
2125 2014, she became the first woman to chair the Senate Committee on
2226 Finance; she is ending her trailblazing career of legislative
2327 leadership after having written four state budgets; and
2428 WHEREAS, Senator Nelson's extensive list of legislative
2529 accomplishments includes establishing the Cancer Prevention and
2630 Research Institute of Texas, reforming medical liability,
2731 overhauling the foster care system, expanding access to mental
2832 health services, championing 30 pieces of legislation to combat
2933 sexual assault and domestic violence, and authoring and
3034 supporting numerous bills to the benefit of Texas teachers and
3135 students; she is held in high esteem by her colleagues for her
3236 professional expertise and bipartisan approach to policymaking,
3337 and she is well known for consistently honoring the
3438 accomplishments and celebratory milestones of her fellow
3539 legislators; and
3640 WHEREAS, Senator Nelson served as president pro tempore
3741 during the 78th Interim, and she was Governor for a Day in 2004;
3842 she has been honored by such institutions as the American Medical
3943 Association, the American Cancer Society, the Texas Association
4044 of Business, and the Texas Council on Family Violence; and
41- WHEREAS, She has skillfully managed the duties of a senator
42- and has taken care of the needs of her constituents while
45+ WHEREAS, She has skillfully managed the duties of a
46+ senator and has taken care of the needs of her constituents while
4347 continuing to be a source of strength to her large and loving
4448 family; she is a devoted wife to J. Michael Nelson, and she is a
4549 loving mother to their five children and a doting grandmother to
4650 their 12 grandchildren; and
4751 WHEREAS, Jane Nelson has been a trusted voice for her North
4852 Texas community and a tireless advocate for women, children,
4953 veterans, and the elderly in Texas; she has shaped policy that
5054 has ensured government efficiency while improving the lives of
5155 all Texans, and her proud legacy of service will continue to
5256 benefit citizens long into the future; now, therefore, be it
5357 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
5458 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Senator Jane
5559 Nelson for her many contributions to the State of Texas and for
5660 her outstanding service as a Texas senator; and, be it further
5761 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5862 her as an expression of high esteem from the Texas Senate.
