2	6		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride
3	7		in paying tribute to Senator Jane Nelson for her 28 years of
4	8		pioneering leadership and exceptional service on behalf of Texas
5	9		citizens; and
6	10		WHEREAS, A widely respected and much beloved public
7	11		leader, Jane Nelson enjoyed careers as an educator and a
8	12		businesswoman before her election to the legislature to
9		-	represent Senate District 12; she has served the constituents
10		-	of the district's counties with integrity and dedication for 10
	13	+	represent Senate District 12; she has served the constituents of
	14	+	the district's counties with integrity and dedication for 10
11	15		consecutive terms, and she is bringing to a close her
12		-	distinguished tenure as the longest-serving Republican
13		-	~~senator;~~ and
	16	+	distinguished tenure as the longest-serving Republican senator;
	17	+	and
14	18		WHEREAS, Jane Nelson first began serving the citizens of
15	19		Texas in 1988, when she was elected to serve as a member of the
16	20		Texas State Board of Education; in 1992, she became the 10th
17	21		woman and the third Republican woman to be elected to the Texas
18	22		Senate; six years later, Senator Nelson became the first
19	23		Republican woman to chair a Senate standing committee when she
20	24		was appointed chair of the Committee on Health Services, and in
21	25		2014, she became the first woman to chair the Senate Committee on
22	26		Finance; she is ending her trailblazing career of legislative
23	27		leadership after having written four state budgets; and
24	28		WHEREAS, Senator Nelson's extensive list of legislative
25	29		accomplishments includes establishing the Cancer Prevention and
26	30		Research Institute of Texas, reforming medical liability,
27	31		overhauling the foster care system, expanding access to mental
28	32		health services, championing 30 pieces of legislation to combat
29	33		sexual assault and domestic violence, and authoring and
30	34		supporting numerous bills to the benefit of Texas teachers and
31	35		students; she is held in high esteem by her colleagues for her
32	36		professional expertise and bipartisan approach to policymaking,
33	37		and she is well known for consistently honoring the
34	38		accomplishments and celebratory milestones of her fellow
35	39		legislators; and
36	40		WHEREAS, Senator Nelson served as president pro tempore
37	41		during the 78th Interim, and she was Governor for a Day in 2004;
38	42		she has been honored by such institutions as the American Medical
39	43		Association, the American Cancer Society, the Texas Association
40	44		of Business, and the Texas Council on Family Violence; and
41		-	WHEREAS, She has skillfully managed the duties of a ~~senator~~

47	51		WHEREAS, Jane Nelson has been a trusted voice for her North
48	52		Texas community and a tireless advocate for women, children,
49	53		veterans, and the elderly in Texas; she has shaped policy that
50	54		has ensured government efficiency while improving the lives of
51	55		all Texans, and her proud legacy of service will continue to
52	56		benefit citizens long into the future; now, therefore, be it
53	57		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
54	58		Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Senator Jane
55	59		Nelson for her many contributions to the State of Texas and for
56	60		her outstanding service as a Texas senator; and, be it further
57	61		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
58	62		her as an expression of high esteem from the Texas Senate.
