| 5 | 8 | | the eye, causing inflammation and scarring; and |
|---|
| 6 | 9 | | WHEREAS, People living with TED often experience |
|---|
| 7 | 10 | | debilitating symptoms, which may include eye bulging, double |
|---|
| 8 | 11 | | vision, blurred vision, pain, and facial disfigurement; the |
|---|
| 9 | 12 | | vision loss caused by TED may get worse over time, and in severe |
|---|
| 10 | 13 | | cases, blindness can occur; and |
|---|
| 11 | 14 | | WHEREAS, TED greatly impacts the quality of life of many |
|---|
| 12 | 15 | | patients, who may struggle with working, performing daily |
|---|
| 13 | 16 | | activities, and coping with the social, psychological, and |
|---|
| 14 | 17 | | financial challenges associated with the disease; and |
|---|
| 15 | 18 | | WHEREAS, It is estimated that 16 out of every 100,000 women |
|---|
| 16 | 19 | | and nearly 3 out of every 100,000 men will develop TED; although |
|---|
| 17 | 20 | | the exact cause of TED is not yet understood, it is known to have |
|---|
| 18 | 21 | | a hereditary component, and individuals who have a family member |
|---|
| 19 | 22 | | with TED or another autoimmune disease are at greater risk of |
|---|
| 20 | 23 | | developing the condition; and |
|---|
| 21 | 24 | | WHEREAS, TED Awareness Week was established through a |
|---|
| 22 | 25 | | collaboration among advocacy organizations, including the |
|---|
| 23 | 26 | | Autoimmune Association; through this important observance, these |
|---|
| 24 | 27 | | organizations are working to educate the public about TED in |
|---|
| 25 | 28 | | hopes that more patients have access to early treatment that can |
|---|
| 26 | 29 | | prevent eye damage, preserve sight, and help them to better |
|---|
| 27 | 30 | | manage this life-altering condition; now, therefore, be it |
