2	6		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	7		recognize the Center for Mexican American Studies at The
4	8		University of Texas at Austin on the occasion of the
5	9		institution's 50th anniversary; and
6	10		WHEREAS, Established in 1970, the Center for Mexican
7	11		American Studies reflects the concerted efforts of students,
8	12		faculty, and community members who sought to ensure that Mexican
9	13		American studies became an integrated part of the university
10	14		system; the center's founding director was the famous scholar
11	15		Dr. Américo Paredes; and
12	16		WHEREAS, The center prioritizes community outreach to help
13	17		create diverse, inclusive, and equitable environments at The
14	18		University of Texas at Austin, in the City of Austin, and
15	19		throughout the state; and
16	20		WHEREAS, Since 2014, the Center for Mexican American
17	21		Studies has worked in partnership with the Department of Mexican
18	22		American and Latina/o Studies and the Latino Research Institute
19	23		to augment Latino studies and research at the university; and
20	24		WHEREAS, The center continues its educational mission of
21	25		empowering students of all backgrounds through focusing on
22	26		scholarly excellence, community engagement, and civic
23	27		advancement, and it has become a national model and leader for
24	28		the advancement of Mexican American studies; and
25	29		WHEREAS, The 50th anniversary celebration of the Center
26	30		for Mexican American Studies is taking place during Hispanic
27	31		Heritage Month on the birthday of Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa;
28	32		this renowned feminist theorist and distinguished alumna of The
29	33		University of Texas at Austin has left a lasting mark on the field
30	34		of Mexican American studies and her work helps to inspire
31	35		continued excellence in scholarship; and
32	36		WHEREAS, The Center for Mexican American Studies at The
33	37		University of Texas at Austin is indeed deserving of special
34	38		recognition for 50 years of advancing engagement, equity, and
35	39		excellence in higher education; now, therefore, be it
36	40		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
37	41		Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend all who have
38	42		contributed to the success of the Center for Mexican American
39	43		Studies and extend to them congratulations on the institution's
40	44		50th anniversary; and, be it further
41	45		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
42	46		the center as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
