5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Frances Tarlton "Sissy" Farenthold, who |
---|
7 | 7 | | died September 26, 2021, at the age of 94; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A legendary activist, educator, and leader for |
---|
9 | 9 | | social justice, Sissy Farenthold was born in Corpus Christi on |
---|
10 | 10 | | October 2, 1926; she attended Corpus Christi High School and |
---|
11 | 11 | | graduated from The Hockaday School; she went on to earn a degree |
---|
12 | 12 | | from Vassar College at the age of 19 and a degree from The |
---|
13 | 13 | | University of Texas School of Law at the age of 22; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Sissy began a long career in public service and |
---|
15 | 15 | | civil rights advocacy by accepting a number of appointments to |
---|
16 | 16 | | various humanitarian service organizations and commissions; she |
---|
17 | 17 | | served as director of Nueces County Legal Aid, and in 1968, she |
---|
18 | 18 | | was elected as the only woman to serve in the Texas House of |
---|
19 | 19 | | Representatives; she gained widespread support for her |
---|
20 | 20 | | sponsorship of the Texas Equal Rights Amendment and for her |
---|
21 | 21 | | tireless pursuit of justice during the investigation of the |
---|
22 | 22 | | Sharpstown Scandal; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Sissy gained national recognition when she was |
---|
24 | 24 | | tapped as a potential vice presidential running mate for George |
---|
25 | 25 | | McGovern at the 1972 Democratic National Convention and was the |
---|
26 | 26 | | first woman whose nomination for the position was brought to a |
---|
27 | 27 | | floor vote; she continued a path of trailblazing leadership in |
---|
28 | 28 | | her roles as the first chair of the National Women's Political |
---|
29 | 29 | | Caucus and as the first woman president of Wells College; she |
---|
30 | 30 | | served as a professor at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and |
---|
31 | 31 | | she taught one of the nation's first classes on sex-based |
---|
32 | 32 | | discrimination as a professor at the University of Houston; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, An esteemed figure in international activism, |
---|
34 | 34 | | Sissy was a member of the Helsinki Watch Committee Board of |
---|
35 | 35 | | Directors, and she helped lead protests against nuclear |
---|
36 | 36 | | proliferation and against apartheid in South Africa; she played a |
---|
37 | 37 | | key role in the Third United Nations Conference for Women, and |
---|
38 | 38 | | she participated in peace-keeping missions throughout Central |
---|
39 | 39 | | America, Asia, and the Middle East; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Sissy gave generously of her time and resources to |
---|
41 | 41 | | charitable and cultural organizations; the Frances Tarlton |
---|
42 | 42 | | "Sissy" Farenthold Endowed Lecture Series in Peace, Social |
---|
43 | 43 | | Justice, and Human Rights is presented each year by the Rapoport |
---|
44 | 44 | | Center and the Rothko Chapel to honor and reflect on her 60 years |
---|
45 | 45 | | of activism and humanitarian service; and |
---|
46 | 46 | | WHEREAS, Sissy married George Edward Farenthold in 1950, |
---|
47 | 47 | | and they were blessed with five children; her three grandchildren |
---|
48 | 48 | | and three great-grandchildren were a source of pride and joy for |
---|
49 | 49 | | her; and |
---|
50 | 50 | | WHEREAS, A truly beloved Texan, Sissy Farenthold was a |
---|
51 | 51 | | tireless voice for the vulnerable and underserved, and she was a |
---|
52 | 52 | | source of strength to others through her compassion and her work |
---|
53 | 53 | | to bring about equal justice for all; she leaves behind a legacy |
---|
54 | 54 | | of service that will continue to inspire citizens long into the |
---|
55 | 55 | | future; now, therefore, be it |
---|
56 | 56 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
57 | 57 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend sincere |
---|
58 | 58 | | condolences to the bereaved family of Frances Tarlton |
---|
59 | 59 | | Farenthold; and, be it further |
---|
60 | 60 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
61 | 61 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
62 | 62 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
63 | 63 | | memory of Sissy Farenthold. |
