5	5	WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their
6	6	memories of Jerry and Joyce Houston of Tyler, who passed away on
7	7	September 16, 2021; and
8	8	WHEREAS, The son of John Bradford Houston and Jewell
9	9	Juanita Houston, Jerry Franklin Houston was born in Chandler on
10	10	May 22, 1929; the former Joyce Laverne Hobbs was born to Julius D.
11	11	Hobbs and Ida Bell Leavels in Ben Wheeler on August 17, 1930; they
12	12	both attended Chandler High School, and when she asked him if she
13	13	could catch a ride on his bicycle during the lunch hour, romance
14	14	bloomed; the couple married on October 8, 1948, and they became
15	15	the proud parents of two children, Garry and Janet; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Mr. Houston served his country in the U.S. Navy
17	17	from 1952 to 1954; after attending Henderson County Junior
18	18	College, he earned his master's degree in education from Texas
19	19	A&M University-Commerce; he spent the first 24 years of his
20	20	career at Harmony High School in Upshur County, where he was a
21	21	teacher, coach, and principal; subsequently, he joined the
22	22	Brownsboro Independent School District and worked for eight
23	23	years as athletic director and for 15 years as principal of
24	24	Chandler Elementary School; Mrs. Houston was employed by
25	25	Brownsboro Junior High School as a secretary for 21 years; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Following their retirement, the Houstons remained
27	27	active in their community; they were valued members of Rock Hill
28	28	Baptist Church, and Mr. Houston served as a deacon, a role he
29	29	held for a total of 60 years at the churches they attended; in his
30	30	leisure time, he loved to go fishing, and Mrs. Houston enjoyed
31	31	cooking and tending to her flowers; they both adored watching the
32	32	athletic events of their grandchildren, Joanna, Swaide, Lexie
33	33	Jo, Matthew, and Timothy; eventually, their treasured family
34	34	grew to include four great-grandchildren, Greyson, Hadley, Adam,
35	35	and Nathan; and
36	36	WHEREAS, The life shared by Jerry and Joyce Houston was
37	37	centered around their loved ones, their faith, and their
38	38	community, and they will forever be remembered with admiration
39	39	and affection by all who were fortunate enough to know them; now,
40	40	therefore, be it
41	41	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
42	42	Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the
43	43	lives of Jerry Franklin Houston and Joyce Laverne Houston and
44	44	extend sincere condolences to all who mourn their passing;
45	45	and, be it further
46	46	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
47	47	prepared for their family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
48	48	this day, it do so in memory of Jerry and Joyce Houston.
