| 6 | 6 | | classroom teachers and retired classroom teachers; imposing fees. |

| 7 | 7 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 8 | 8 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 504, Transportation Code, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | is amended by adding Sections 504.517 and 504.518 to read as |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | follows: |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Sec. 504.517. CLASSROOM TEACHERS. (a) In this section, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | "classroom teacher" has the meaning assigned by Section 5.001, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Education Code. |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | (b) The department shall issue specialty license plates for |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | classroom teachers with at least 15 years of service teaching |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | public school students. The license plates must include the words |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | "Texas Teacher" and depict a Texas public education logo. The |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | department shall design the license plates in consultation with the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Texas Education Agency. |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (c) The fee for issuance of the license plates is $10. |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Sec. 504.518. RETIRED CLASSROOM TEACHERS. (a) In this |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | section, "retired classroom teacher" means a person who: |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | (1) was formerly employed as a classroom teacher, as |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | that term is defined by Section 5.001, Education Code; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (2) is a retiree of the Teacher Retirement System of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Texas. |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | (b) The department shall issue specialty license plates for |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | retired classroom teachers with at least 20 years of service |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | teaching public school students. The license plates must include |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the words "Retired Texas Teacher" and depict a Texas public |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | education logo. The department shall design the license plates in |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | consultation with the Texas Education Agency. |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | (c) The fee for issuance of the license plates is $5. |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
