55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to requiring coursework in economics for an associate or
88 baccalaureate degree program at a public institution of higher
99 education.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 51, Education Code, is
1212 amended by adding Section 51.311 to read as follows:
1313 Sec. 51.311. ECONOMICS. (a) In this section, "institution
1414 of higher education" has the meaning assigned by Section 61.003.
1515 (b) An institution of higher education may not award an
1616 associate or baccalaureate degree to any person unless the person
1717 has credit for at least three semester credit hours or the
1818 equivalent for a course in economics that dedicates equal time to
1919 macroeconomics and microeconomics.
2020 SECTION 2. Section 51.311, Education Code, as added by this
2121 Act, applies only to a student who enrolls in an associate or
2222 baccalaureate degree program at a public institution of higher
2323 education on or after January 1, 2024.
2424 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
