| 10 | 10 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 11 | 11 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 51, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | amended by adding Section 51.311 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Sec. 51.311. ECONOMICS. (a) In this section, "institution |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | of higher education" has the meaning assigned by Section 61.003. |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | (b) An institution of higher education may not award an |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | associate or baccalaureate degree to any person unless the person |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | has credit for at least three semester credit hours or the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | equivalent for a course in economics that dedicates equal time to |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | macroeconomics and microeconomics. |

| 20 | 20 | | SECTION 2. Section 51.311, Education Code, as added by this |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Act, applies only to a student who enrolls in an associate or |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | baccalaureate degree program at a public institution of higher |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | education on or after January 1, 2024. |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
