77 relating to campaign contribution limits for certain offices.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 253, Election Code, is
1010 amended by adding Section 253.008 to read as follows:
1111 Sec. 253.008. LIMITATION ON CERTAIN CAMPAIGN
1212 CONTRIBUTIONS. (a) In this section, "candidate for statewide
1313 office" does not include a candidate for statewide judicial office,
1414 as defined by Section 253.152.
1515 (b) A person may not knowingly make or authorize the making
1616 of a campaign contribution to a candidate for statewide office or
1717 the legislature, or to a specific-purpose committee supporting the
1818 candidate or opposing the candidate's opponent, for the primary or
1919 general election in which the candidate is involved in an amount
2020 that exceeds 50 times the amount of the contribution limits for an
2121 election applicable to a federal candidate under the Federal
2222 Election Campaign Act of 1971 (52 U.S.C. Section 30101 et seq.).
2323 SECTION 2. Section 253.008, Election Code, as added by this
2424 Act, applies only to a campaign contribution made on or after the
2525 effective date of this Act. A campaign contribution made before the
2626 effective date of this Act is governed by the law in effect when the
2727 contribution was made and is not aggregated with campaign
2828 contributions made on or after that date.
2929 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
