9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Chapter 493, Government Code, is amended by |
---|
11 | 11 | | adding Section 493.035 to read as follows: |

12 | 12 | | Sec. 493.035. BODY WORN CAMERA POLICY. (a) In this |
---|
13 | 13 | | section, "body worn camera" has the meaning assigned by Section |
---|
14 | 14 | | 1701.651, Occupations Code. |
---|
15 | 15 | | (b) The department shall adopt a policy for the use of body |
---|
16 | 16 | | worn cameras by correctional officers at facilities operated by or |
---|
17 | 17 | | under contract with the department. The policy must require that |
---|
18 | 18 | | each correctional officer be equipped with a body worn camera |
---|
19 | 19 | | during the officer's shift and require each officer to keep the |
---|
20 | 20 | | camera activated during the performance of the officer's duties. |
---|
21 | 21 | | SECTION 2. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice shall |
---|
22 | 22 | | adopt the policy required by Section 493.035, Government Code, as |
---|
23 | 23 | | added by this Act, not later than January 1, 2024. |
---|
24 | 24 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
