66 AN ACT
77 relating to the provision in the Nepali language of application
88 forms and an alternate examination for a driver's license.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 521, Transportation Code,
1111 is amended by adding Section 521.015 to read as follows:
1212 Sec. 521.015. LICENSE APPLICATION AND FORMS IN NEPALI. The
1313 department shall provide in Nepali:
1414 (1) the application form for an original or renewal
1515 driver's license; and
1616 (2) all other forms required under Subchapter G for an
1717 application for an original or renewal driver's license.
1818 SECTION 2. Subchapter H, Chapter 521, Transportation Code,
1919 is amended by adding Section 521.1621 to read as follows:
2020 Sec. 521.1621. ALTERNATE EXAMINATION IN NEPALI. (a) The
2121 department shall design and administer in each county of this state
2222 an alternate examination for Nepali-speaking applicants who are
2323 unable to take the regular examination in English.
2424 (b) The alternate examination must be identical to the
2525 examination administered to other applicants under Section 521.161
2626 except that all directions and written material, other than the
2727 text of highway signs, must be in Nepali. The text of highway signs
2828 must be in English.
2929 SECTION 3. Section 521.1621, Transportation Code, as added
3030 by this Act, applies only to an application for a driver's license
3131 that is filed on or after the effective date of this Act. An
3232 application that was filed before the effective date of this Act is
3333 subject to the law in effect immediately before the effective date
3434 of this Act, and the former law is continued in effect for that
3535 purpose.
3636 SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
