| 6 | 6 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 7 | 7 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 548, Transportation Code, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | is amended by adding Section 548.054 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Sec. 548.054. INSPECTION OF CERTAIN TRAVEL TRAILERS BY |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | OWNER. A travel trailer, as defined by Section 501.002, that is not |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | exempt from this chapter under Section 548.052(3) meets the safety |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | inspection requirements of this chapter if the owner submits to the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Texas Department of Motor Vehicles or county tax assessor-collector |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | at the time of the trailer's registration an affidavit stating |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | that: |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | (1) the owner has inspected the trailer during the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | period prescribed by Section 548.101; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (2) the trailer is in proper and safe condition and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | complies with this chapter and the rules adopted under this |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | chapter. |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | SECTION 2. The heading to Section 548.510, Transportation |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Code, is amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Sec. 548.510. FEE FOR CERTAIN EXEMPTED VEHICLES [NOT |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | SUBJECT TO INSPECTION]; COLLECTION OF FEE DURING REGISTRATION. |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | SECTION 3. Section 548.510(a), Transportation Code, is |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | (a) A vehicle described by Section 548.052(3) that has an |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | actual gross weight or registered gross weight of more than 4,500 |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | pounds, and a travel trailer that has been certified by the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | trailer's owner as meeting the safety inspection requirements of |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | this chapter under Section 548.054, are each [is] subject to a fee |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | in the amount of $7.50. |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | SECTION 4. It is the intent of the legislature that the |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Public |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Safety implement the provisions of this Act using money |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | appropriated to those agencies that may be spent for that purpose. |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | SECTION 5. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
