| 6 | 6 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 7 | 7 | | SECTION 1. Sections 451.001(1) and (3), Occupations Code, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | are amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | (1) "Athletic injury" means an injury sustained by a |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | person as a result of physical activity or exercise or the person's |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | participation in an organized sport or sport-related exercise or |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | activity, including interscholastic, intercollegiate, intramural, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | recreational, semiprofessional, and professional sports |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | activities. |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | (3) "Athletic training" means the form of health care |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | that includes principles and methods for managing and treating |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | athletic injuries for athletic individuals in good general health |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | [the practice of preventing, recognizing, assessing, managing, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | treating, disposing of, and reconditioning athletic injuries] |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | under the direction of a physician licensed in this state or another |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | qualified, licensed health professional who is authorized to refer |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | for health care services within the scope of the person's license, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | and consists of: |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | (A) managing the risk of an athletic injury or |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | illness; |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | (B) preventing an athletic injury or illness; |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | (C) assessing an athletic injury or illness; |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | (D) providing immediate emergency care; |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | (E) providing therapeutic intervention for an |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | athletic injury; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | (F) reconditioning an athletic injury or |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | illness. |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
