55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to requiring training in the importance of mental and
88 physical health as a requisite for certain medical degrees.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 51, Education Code, is
1111 amended by adding Section 51.312 to read as follows:
1212 Sec. 51.312. MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH TRAINING REQUIRED.
1313 (a) In this section, "medical school" means:
1414 (1) a medical school as defined by Section 61.501; and
1515 (2) any other institution of higher education, as
1616 defined by Section 61.003, or school, department, or college of
1717 such an institution, that awards medical degrees.
1818 (b) Each medical school shall include training regarding
1919 the importance of student, resident, and physician mental and
2020 physical health in the curriculum required for a medical degree.
2121 (c) This section does not apply to the requirements for the
2222 degree program of a student who entered the degree program at a
2323 medical school before the 2024 fall semester. This subsection
2424 expires January 1, 2030.
2525 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2626 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2727 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2828 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2929 Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
