9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 264.501(8), Family Code, is amended to |
---|
11 | 11 | | read as follows: |
---|
12 | 12 | | (8) "Preventable death" means a death that may have |
---|
13 | 13 | | been prevented by reasonable medical, social, legal, |
---|
14 | 14 | | psychological, or educational intervention. The term includes the |
---|
15 | 15 | | death of a child from: |
---|
16 | 16 | | (A) intentional or unintentional injuries; |
---|
17 | 17 | | (B) medical neglect; |
---|
18 | 18 | | (C) lack of access to medical care; |
---|
19 | 19 | | (D) neglect and reckless conduct, including |
---|
20 | 20 | | failure to supervise and failure to seek medical care; [and] |
---|
21 | 21 | | (E) premature birth associated with any factor |
---|
22 | 22 | | described by Paragraphs (A) through (D); and |
---|
23 | 23 | | (F) suicide. |

24 | 24 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
