55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to required notice to high school students and parents or
88 guardians regarding a student's receipt of certain awards,
99 recognitions, and scholarship opportunities.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 28, Education Code, is
1212 amended by adding Section 28.0261 to read as follows:
1313 Sec. 28.0261. NOTIFICATION OF AWARDS, RECOGNITIONS, AND
1414 SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. The board of trustees of a school
1515 district and the governing body of an open-enrollment charter
1616 school shall notify each high school student enrolled at the
1717 district or school and the student's parent or guardian as soon as
1818 practicable after the school receives information indicating that
1919 the student:
2020 (1) has earned an award or recognition; or
2121 (2) is eligible for a scholarship opportunity as a
2222 result of the student's achievement, including the student's
2323 qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
2424 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2023-2024
2525 school year.
2626 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2727 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2828 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2929 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3030 Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
