| 8 | 8 | | guardians regarding a student's receipt of certain awards, |

| 9 | 9 | | recognitions, and scholarship opportunities. |

| 10 | 10 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 11 | 11 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 28, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | amended by adding Section 28.0261 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Sec. 28.0261. NOTIFICATION OF AWARDS, RECOGNITIONS, AND |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. The board of trustees of a school |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | district and the governing body of an open-enrollment charter |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | school shall notify each high school student enrolled at the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | district or school and the student's parent or guardian as soon as |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | practicable after the school receives information indicating that |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the student: |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (1) has earned an award or recognition; or |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | (2) is eligible for a scholarship opportunity as a |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | result of the student's achievement, including the student's |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program. |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2023-2024 |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | school year. |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
