| 7 | 7 | | relating to the inclusion of firearm safety instruction in the |

| 8 | 8 | | required health curriculum for public school students. |

| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | adding Subsection (u) to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | (u) In addition to any other essential knowledge and skills |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the State Board of Education adopts for the health curriculum under |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Subsection (a)(2)(B), the board shall adopt for the health |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | curriculum essential knowledge and skills that address topics |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | relating to firearm safety that: |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | (1) focus on accident prevention; |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (2) promote the safety and protection of students; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | (3) emphasize how students should respond when |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | encountering a firearm. |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2023-2024 |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | school year. |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
|---|
