55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the inclusion of firearm safety instruction in the
88 required health curriculum for public school students.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by
1111 adding Subsection (u) to read as follows:
1212 (u) In addition to any other essential knowledge and skills
1313 the State Board of Education adopts for the health curriculum under
1414 Subsection (a)(2)(B), the board shall adopt for the health
1515 curriculum essential knowledge and skills that address topics
1616 relating to firearm safety that:
1717 (1) focus on accident prevention;
1818 (2) promote the safety and protection of students; and
1919 (3) emphasize how students should respond when
2020 encountering a firearm.
2121 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2023-2024
2222 school year.
2323 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2424 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2525 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2626 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2727 Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
