| 7 | 7 | | relating to the inclusion of information about the process of |

| 8 | 8 | | voting as part of the social studies curriculum requirements for |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | public high school students. |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 11 | 11 | | SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | adding Subsection (c-4) to read as follows: |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | (c-4) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | requiring a high school student, as part of the social studies |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | curriculum under Subsection (a)(1)(D), to be provided at least once |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | with practical information about the process of voting in public |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | elections, including specific information about using the type of |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | voting machines used by the county in which the student is enrolled. |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | The rules shall require a school district, to the extent |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | practicable, to seek assistance and cooperation from the county |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | election office in providing students with exposure to and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | experience using the applicable voting machine. |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2023-2024 |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | school year. |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
