88 AN ACT
99 relating to the provision of scholarships by private or independent
1010 institutions of higher education under the Joint Admission Medical
1111 Program.
1212 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1313 SECTION 1. Section 51.831, Education Code, is amended to
1414 read as follows:
1515 Sec. 51.831. COUNCIL AGREEMENT WITH PRIVATE OR INDEPENDENT
1616 INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION. Each private or independent
1717 institution of higher education must enter into an agreement with
1818 the council under which the institution agrees to:
1919 (1) provide academic counseling to a participating
2020 student or program alternate enrolled at the institution;
2121 (2) as soon as practicable, implement or expand
2222 appropriate degree programs as necessary to provide participating
2323 students with sufficient preparation for enrollment in
2424 participating medical schools;
2525 (3) select a faculty director or an academic or health
2626 professions advisor to assist in implementing the program at the
2727 institution and in implementing or expanding the institution's
2828 degree programs as necessary under Subdivision (2); and
2929 (4) provide, in addition to any other scholarship
3030 money awarded to the student, a scholarship to a participating
3131 student in the amount required for a participating student
3232 attending a general academic teaching institution, except that
3333 [but not to exceed] the amount of scholarship awards may not exceed
3434 the amount of tuition and fees that the student is charged.
3535 SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies to the
3636 provision of scholarships pursuant to an agreement under Section
3737 51.831, Education Code, as amended by this Act, beginning with the
3838 2023-2024 academic year.
3939 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
