66 AN ACT
77 relating to a school district's duty to notify certain parents or
88 guardians of a program providing students with reading disabilities
99 the ability to borrow audiobooks free of charge.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Section 28.006(g-2), Education Code, is amended
1212 to read as follows:
1313 (g-2) In accordance with a notification program developed
1414 by the commissioner by rule, a school district shall notify the
1515 parent or guardian of each student determined, on the basis of a
1616 screening under Section 38.003 or other basis, to have a reading
1717 disability or dyslexia or a related disorder[, or determined, on
1818 the basis of reading instrument results, to be at risk for dyslexia
1919 or other reading difficulties,] of the program maintained by the
2020 Texas State Library and Archives Commission providing students with
2121 reading disabilities the ability to borrow audiobooks free of
2222 charge.
2323 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2023-2024
2424 school year.
2525 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2626 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2727 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2828 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2929 Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
