55 AN ACT
66 relating to the reporting and investigation of motor vehicle

88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Section 550.041(a), Transportation Code, is
1010 amended to read as follows:
1111 (a) A peace officer who is notified of a motor vehicle
1212 accident resulting in injury to or death of a person or property
1313 damage to an apparent extent of at least $5,000 [$1,000] may
1414 investigate the accident and file justifiable charges relating to
1515 the accident without regard to whether the accident occurred on
1616 property to which this chapter applies.
1717 SECTION 2. Section 550.062(a), Transportation Code, is
1818 amended to read as follows:
1919 (a) A law enforcement officer who in the regular course of
2020 duty investigates a motor vehicle accident shall make a written
2121 report of the accident if the accident resulted in injury to or the
2222 death of a person or damage to the property of any one person to the
2323 apparent extent of $5,000 [$1,000] or more.
2424 SECTION 3. Section 601.151(a), Transportation Code, is
2525 amended to read as follows:
2626 (a) This subchapter applies only to a motor vehicle accident
2727 in this state that results in bodily injury or death or in damage to
2828 the property of one person of at least $5,000 [$1,000].
2929 SECTION 4. The change in law made by this Act applies only
3030 to a motor vehicle accident occurring on or after the effective date
3131 of this Act. A motor vehicle accident occurring before the
3232 effective date of this Act is covered by the law in effect on the
3333 date the accident occurred, and the former law is continued in
3434 effect for that purpose.
3535 SECTION 5. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
