55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the use of funds awarded under the Jobs and Education
88 for Texans (JET) Grant Program.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 134.004(b), Education Code, as amended
1111 by Chapters 80 (S.B. 346) and 499 (H.B. 4279), Acts of the 87th
1212 Legislature, Regular Session, 2021, is reenacted and amended to
1313 read as follows:
1414 (b) Grants may be awarded under this chapter from the Jobs
1515 and Education for Texans (JET) fund:
1616 (1) to defray the start-up costs associated with the
1717 development of new career and technical education programs at
1818 public junior colleges, public technical institutes, public state
1919 colleges, and school districts and open-enrollment charter schools
2020 described under Section 134.007 that meet the requirements of
2121 Section 134.006; and
2222 (2) to pay costs for the acquisition, implementation,
2323 and ongoing maintenance of technology solutions necessary to
2424 support programs described by Subdivision (1).
2525 SECTION 2. Section 134.006(b), Education Code, is amended
2626 to read as follows:
2727 (b) A grant received under this section may be used only:
2828 (1) to support courses or programs that prepare
2929 students for career employment in occupations that are identified
3030 by local businesses as being in high demand, including courses
3131 offered for dual credit;
3232 (2) to finance initial costs of career and technical
3333 education course or program development, including the costs of
3434 constructing or renovating facilities, purchasing equipment, and
3535 other expenses associated with the development of a new course;
3636 [and]
3737 (3) to finance a career and technical education course
3838 or program that leads to a license, certificate, or postsecondary
3939 degree; and
4040 (4) to finance the acquisition, implementation, and
4141 ongoing maintenance of technology solutions necessary to support a
4242 course or program described by Subdivision (1), (2), or (3).
4343 SECTION 3. The change in law made by this Act applies only
4444 to a grant awarded on or after the effective date of this Act.
4545 SECTION 4. To the extent of any conflict, this Act prevails
4646 over another Act of the 88th Legislature, Regular Session, 2023,
4747 relating to nonsubstantive additions to and corrections in enacted
4848 codes.
4949 SECTION 5. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
