| 8 | 8 | | the Texas Education Agency. |

| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | amended by adding Section 29.938 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Sec. 29.938. STUDY ON ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL SCHEDULES. (a) |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | The agency shall conduct a study on the adoption of alternative |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | instructional day or school week schedules by school districts to |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | determine whether these alternative schedules: |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | (1) help school districts attract and retain qualified |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | teachers and classroom support personnel; |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (2) ensure that teachers and classroom support |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | personnel have sufficient time to perform assigned duties; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (3) provide sufficient instructional time to maintain |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | student achievement and improvement. |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | (b) The study must consider alternative instructional day |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | or school week schedules maintained by at least one school |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | district, such as: |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (1) a four-day school week; |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | (2) a four-and-one-half-day school week; |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | (3) the use of one day per week for remedial education |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | to compensate for learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic; |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | (4) work-study schedules, in which students attend |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | class three days per week and participate in employment or skills |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | training two days per week; |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | (5) a schedule involving a combination of two |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | classrooms of students with two or more teachers assigned to that |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | combined classroom; or |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | (6) schedules allowing teachers to work partial days. |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | (c) Not later than December 31, 2024, the agency shall |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | prepare and submit to the legislature a report on the results of the |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | study and any recommendations for legislative or other action. |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | (d) This section expires September 1, 2025. |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
