| 8 | 8 | | restoration of, and education regarding, certain landmarks and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | buildings important to African American history in this state. |

| 10 | 10 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 11 | 11 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 442, Government Code, is |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | amended by adding Section 442.034 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Sec. 442.034. GRANT PROGRAM FOR HISTORICAL LANDMARKS |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | IMPORTANT TO AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY. (a) The commission shall |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | establish a grant program to preserve, renovate, and restore |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | buildings and landmarks that highlight the history, struggles, and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | triumphs of the African American community in this state. |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (b) The commission may award grants for the purposes |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | described by Subsection (a) to owners of or to individuals or |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | nonprofits responsible for the care of a historical landmark or |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | building important to the history of the African American community |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | in this state. The commission shall establish procedures to |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | administer the grant program, including eligibility standards and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | procedures for applying for a grant under this section. |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (c) A grant recipient may use a grant awarded under this |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | section to: |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | (1) preserve, maintain, and restore a historical |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | landmark or building important to the history of the African |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | American community in this state; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | (2) develop educational programs relevant to those |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | landmarks and buildings to be used on the site. |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | (d) The commission may solicit gifts, grants, and donations |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | from any private or public source for the purposes of this section. |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | SECTION 2. As soon as practicable after the effective date |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | of this Act, the Texas Historical Commission shall adopt rules to |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | implement Section 442.034, Government Code, as added by this Act. |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
