55 AN ACT
66 relating to the use of political contributions to settle a civil

88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Section 253.035, Election Code, is amended by
1010 adding Subsection (c-1) to read as follows:
1111 (c-1) The prohibition prescribed by Subsection (a) includes
1212 the personal use of political contributions accepted by a person as
1313 a candidate or officeholder or by a specific-purpose committee for
1414 the purpose of supporting the person as a candidate or assisting the
1515 person as an officeholder to settle a civil action asserting a claim
1616 against the officeholder.
1717 SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only
1818 to the use of a political contribution that occurs on or after the
1919 effective date of this Act. The use of a political contribution
2020 that occurs before the effective date of this Act is governed by the
2121 law in effect on the date the use occurred, and the former law is
2222 continued in effect for that purpose.
2323 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
