| 6 | 6 | | relating to the jurisdiction of a court over a child in the managing |

| 7 | 7 | | conservatorship of the state after the child's 18th birthday. |

| 8 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 9 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Section 263.608, Family Code, is amended as |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | follows: |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Sec. 263.608. RIGHTS OF YOUNG ADULT. |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | (a) A young adult who consents to the continued jurisdiction |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | of the court has the same rights as any other adult of the same age. |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | (b) The court is prohibited from extending trial |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | independence status as described by Section 263.6015(c) or |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | extending jurisdiction over a young adult as described by Section |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | 263.602 if a young adult objects in court or in writing. |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
