| 8 | 8 | | current and former peace officers in receiving a teacher |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | certification. |

| 10 | 10 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 11 | 11 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 21, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | amended by adding Section 21.066 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Sec. 21.066. TEACHER CERTIFICATION GRANT PROGRAM FOR PEACE |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | OFFICERS. (a) From money appropriated or otherwise available for |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the purpose, the board shall establish a grant program to enable |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | eligible persons to receive a teacher certification under this |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | subchapter. |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (b) To be eligible to receive a grant under the program, a |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | person must: |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (1) be: |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | (A) a peace officer, as defined by Article 2.12, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Code of Criminal Procedure; or |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | (B) a retired peace officer, as defined by |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Section 1701.3161, Occupations Code; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (2) hold a bachelor's degree from an institution of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | higher education that is, and at the time the person received the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | degree was, accredited or otherwise approved by an accrediting |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | organization recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Board. |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | (c) A grant awarded under this section may be used only to |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | pay: |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | (1) the costs of an educator preparation program or |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | alternative educator certification program; or |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | (2) a fee assessed for the administration of an |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | examination prescribed under Section 21.048 for teacher |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | certification. |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | (d) The board shall propose rules necessary to implement |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | this section. |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
