55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the establishment of a grant program to assist certain
88 current and former peace officers in receiving a teacher
99 certification.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 21, Education Code, is
1212 amended by adding Section 21.066 to read as follows:
1313 Sec. 21.066. TEACHER CERTIFICATION GRANT PROGRAM FOR PEACE
1414 OFFICERS. (a) From money appropriated or otherwise available for
1515 the purpose, the board shall establish a grant program to enable
1616 eligible persons to receive a teacher certification under this
1717 subchapter.
1818 (b) To be eligible to receive a grant under the program, a
1919 person must:
2020 (1) be:
2121 (A) a peace officer, as defined by Article 2.12,
2222 Code of Criminal Procedure; or
2323 (B) a retired peace officer, as defined by
2424 Section 1701.3161, Occupations Code; and
2525 (2) hold a bachelor's degree from an institution of
2626 higher education that is, and at the time the person received the
2727 degree was, accredited or otherwise approved by an accrediting
2828 organization recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating
2929 Board.
3030 (c) A grant awarded under this section may be used only to
3131 pay:
3232 (1) the costs of an educator preparation program or
3333 alternative educator certification program; or
3434 (2) a fee assessed for the administration of an
3535 examination prescribed under Section 21.048 for teacher
3636 certification.
3737 (d) The board shall propose rules necessary to implement
3838 this section.
3939 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
