55 AN ACT
66 relating to the essential knowledge and skills of the technology
77 applications curriculum for public school students.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by
1010 amending Subsection (c-3) and adding Subsection (c-4 to read as
1111 follows:
1212 (c-3) In adopting the essential knowledge and skills for the
1313 technology applications curriculum for grade seven [kindergarten]
1414 through grade eight, the State Board of Education shall adopt
1515 essential knowledge and skills that include Internet safety,
1616 keyboard use, coding, computer programming, computational
1717 thinking, and cybersecurity, or that would require the use of
1818 electronic devices, digital instruction. The State Board of
1919 Education shall review and revise, as needed, the essential
2020 knowledge and skills of the technology applications curriculum
2121 every five years to ensure the curriculum:
2222 (1) is relevant to student education; and
2323 (2) aligns with current or emerging professions.
2424 (c-4) The board may not adopt essential knowledge and skills
2525 that require the use of electronic devices or digital instruction
2626 for kindergarten through grade eight for any purpose not required
2727 by Subsection (c-3).
2828 SECTION 2. Not later than December 31, 2024, the State Board
2929 of Education shall review and revise, as needed, the essential
3030 knowledge and skills of the technology applications curriculum as
3131 required by Section 28.002(c-3), Education Code, as amended by this
3232 Act.
3333 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
