| 8 | 8 | | Coordinating Board regarding a teacher apprenticeship program. |

| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 61, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | amended by adding Section 61.06692 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Sec. 61.06692. STUDY AND REPORT ON TEACHER APPRENTICESHIP |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | PROGRAM. (a) The board, with the assistance of the Texas Education |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Agency and the State Board for Educator Certification, shall |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | conduct a study to determine the feasibility of and best practices |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | for allowing students to obtain certification as a classroom |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | teacher under an apprenticeship program. |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (b) The study must provide for an alternate pathway for |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | teacher certification that takes less time to complete, is more |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | affordable, and involves more direct experience than the standard |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | pathway for teacher certification. |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | (c) In conducting the study, the board shall collaborate |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | with the Texas Education Agency and the State Board for Educator |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Certification. |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (d) Not later than December 1, 2025, the board shall submit |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | to the governor, the lieutenant governor, the speaker of the house |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | of representatives, the commissioner of education, and the State |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Board for Educator Certification a written report that includes the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | study's findings and any recommendations for legislative or other |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | action. |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | (e) This section expires January 1, 2026. |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
